Flowers springing up everywhere

May 6, 2008 by Tricia

My garden is looking lovely this year. It seems that almost each day a new plant has sprung up or a flower has started to bloom.

Here’s a close up of one of the tulip buds that was about to bloom a week ago when I took this photo. There are even more flowers filling the garden now.

Our puppy has been pretty good about staying out of the garden.

A month ago we started saying “no garden’ every time she went near our flower beds or anyone else’s when we were walking her. However lately she’s been sticking her nose into the garden to smell things. I guess even she can’t resist the smell of all the new plants that have been springing up.

Blackout!

May 4, 2008 by Tricia

Our power finally came back on. Yeah!

At around 11:30 pm last night, as Chris and I were watching TV, our power went out for a second, came back on again for a few seconds then we were pitched into total darkness.

We took a look outside and several streets around us were affected by the power outage too. The power finally came back on at 2:30 am after being off for 3 hours. Not fun when you’re in the middle of a blog post!

Good thing we have a lot of candles in the house. We quickly gathered candles from various parts of the house and lit them up in safe areas. Actually we put the dog in her crate first as I’m sure she would have knocked a candle over if she’d been out.

I did try to go to bed after waiting for the power to come back on for about 45 minutes. Chris has one of those book reading lights so I read a novel in bed for a while, hoping to get sleepy. I think I was just finally falling asleep when the furnace came on and startled me. That’s how I knew the power was back on.

Good thing I woke up though as I’d tried to turn out the lamps on the main floor, but I wasn’t successful as there were lights blazing in the living room when I checked.

Now I’m up and I’m hoping to get back to bed soon.

Finally got a little bit of sleep

May 1, 2008 by Tricia

I can’t believe I’m still going. I think I’m like the energizer bunny. Honestly … I’ve only had about three hours sleep in the last 24 hours and haven’t averaged much more than that over the last week per day.

I did manage to sleep for two hours early this evening. That was only after I took Midnight out for a long walk. She needed the exercise and I needed to make myself tired.

There are some great walking and biking trails in our area so we headed for one of our favorites. We even strayed off the trail into an area being developed for commercial real estate. All in all I think we did a five mile walk.

I’m due for a seriously good sleep tonight, let me tell ya!

We have new neighbors!

April 29, 2008 by Tricia

Our neighbors finally sold their home a couple of months ago and they moved out this past Thursday and Friday. I really didn’t think they’d manage to sell their home since they had the price so high – very high considering they hadn’t done anything to the home and I’ve just found out that the kitchen doesn’t even have a stove! No wonder they were always using their deep fryer on their side of the enclosed back porch. Geez!

Anyway, the new neighbors came by on Saturday and we met them. Well, Chris talked to the husband a few times, and he and I both spoke with the wife. From what we can tell they seem like a really nice couple.

They’ve decided to do a bit of work around the home before they move in and don’t plan to fully move in until the beginning of July. We didn’t ask, but I suspect that they are currently living in an apartment. When we bought our house we kept our apartment for an extra month as well (cashed in on that first and last and as a result didn’t pay rent for that last month) as we did work around our home.

Apparently our area is quite hot in the Real Estate market. Our new neighbor told me that her agent and all their friends said this was really an up and coming area. Cool .. No wonder there are so many houses going up for sale and new people moving in so often lately! We might have to hang theater rope to keep the potential buyers at bay!

The new neighbor – the man – plays in a band so I’m sure he and Chris will end up getting together to jam. Both are guitar players.

As I said I only met the new lady of the house once, but she seemed very nice, down to earth and I have a feeling we’ll get along quite well.

Things to do with our dog this summer?

April 27, 2008 by Tricia

Chris and I are excited about having our puppy around and the fact that we’ll more than likely be outside doing more interesting activities this year as a result.

We’ve even gone so far as to brainstorm regarding all the different places we can take our dog and what interesting things we can do with her. I’ve mentioned many times that I’ve enjoyed just getting out each day to take her for a walk, but we can do so much more.

For example we love taking her to the park and watching her run around on her long leash. We aren’t comfortable with her going leashless yet although she’s fairly responsive when we call her to come to us. We’ve also taken her to a few of our Toronto beaches already. I’m sure she’ll really enjoy that in the heat of the summer when she can take a nice dip in the cool waters of Lake Ontario to cool off.

Lately I’ve been considering getting skate shoes. She loves her walks, but if I get skate shoes I could go even farther with her without over tiring myself.

I think she’s still a little too young and not obedient enough to tag along beside our bikes if we went riding … plus they say you really shouldn’t take young dogs running for any major distances until they are about two years old as they can hurt themselves more easily.

Anyone have any great suggestions as to what else we can do with our dog this summer?

BTW we’re enjoying a feast today thanks to our neighbors and the fact that they are celebrating Greek Orthodox Easter. Take a look at the delicacies they gave us! Yummmmm!
