Getting ready for our new TV

January 29, 2010 by Tricia

I’m crossing my fingers and knocking on wood in the hopes that my cold is getting a little bit better. I was totally miserable yesterday … and I guess I’m not much better today, but the runny nose is slowing down, so hopefully that’s a sign that my cold is beginning to get better.

I have a lot to do this weekend, so I hope that I feel at least a bit better by tomorrow. You see we’re hoping that the new TV that we bought two weeks ago is finally at the store so that we can pick it up. I’m so looking forward to checking it out and getting it all hooked up to the new home theater that we bought last weekend.

Plus, last weekend we started to do some small renovations to our living room .. ie finally re-hooking up two electrical outlets that we hadn’t hooked up the last time we did renovations to our living room dining room.

We were going to rearrange the furniture in the living room in preparation for the new TV last weekend, but that’s when I started getting sick so we put that on hold. So tomorrow we might be picking up our new TV, rearranging the room and then fiddling with hooking everything up. I expect to be busy for hours! We also have to remember to get some new air filters for the furnace … It’s time to put new ones in!

Darn … my husband is just talking to the guy from Best Buy right now and our Samsung Plasma is NOT in. It might be two more weeks! Crap! Ok now I’m ticked!

At least the sales guy from Best Buy is working with us … he’s going to give us another $100 off the TV (we’ve already got $200 off it!) or 50% off on a new TV stand. Our current stand is specially built for our DLP so I do think we need a new stand … we’ll see. Sigh

Renter neighbors and their noisy car

January 29, 2010 by Tricia

I can’t wait until our renter neighbors either move out or get kicked out. I can’t say that enough.

They’re a bad bunch. They got the house next door because they lied about their jobs (they don’t work) and because they have three young children … but it seems like there are more than just the five of them living in the house .. maybe three extra guys.

They always look like they’re high and as I’ve mentioned in the past they seems to be scamming the cable company and Bell Canada … they’ve broken into their cable box (it still sits open all the wires exposed). I can only imagine what they’ve done to the inside of the house.

They’re car is the biggest issue that we face with them these days though. The woman has been working lately and every night she comes out and starts up the car at about 10:15 or so and then goes back inside while letting it run. She doesn’t come out again until about 10:45. So yeah .. she lets their car warm up in the driveway for about half an hour.

We have a new car idling law here in Toronto and I believe you’re not supposed to let your car idle for more than 3 minutes, so her warming up her car for 30 minutes is insane. Just think how much gas she’s wasting?

On top of that they’re car has a major muffler problem and an engine problem so it’s crazy noisy. With my ears blocked because of this head cold the noise just goes right to my head. Actually their car is so noisy that I can feel the engine vibrations as I sit on the couch!

To top that off I saw the husband walking into the house today with a bunch of car parts … maybe Mopar parts or something. I hope it’s to fix up the car and not to sup it up so it’s even noisier!

Our driveway is really tiny … barely enough room to park one car. By this I mean that drivers and passengers must walk on the neighbors lawn once the car is parked in the tiny driveway. So we’re sharing the driveway. We have it for a month and then they use it fr a month. On Monday we take over the driveway again and I’m dying for that day to come.

Did I say that I can’t wait for these rotten neighbors to leave?

I think I’m actually glad the weekend is over!

January 17, 2010 by Tricia

I’ve been so busy all weekend that it doesn’t even feel like it was a weekend. Too bad it’s over! LOL

On Friday our TV started acting up again. It’s a DLP that we bought in 2004. We can watch it for a while, but every once in a while the picture freezes and goes into weird black and white (mostly black) and there’s nothing we can do to make it work other than turning the TV off for 30 to 60 minutes then it works again for a while … sometimes. The odd thing is that when the picture freezes we can still hear the sound for whatever we’re watching.

Anyway .. since the TV is likely on it’s last legs my husband and I went out to Best Buy on Friday evening. They’re having a big sale on HDTV’s so it was the perfect time to look. After looking at just about every LCD and Plasma TV that they had we decided to get a 50″ Samsung PN50B850 Plasma TV. Unfortunately it wasn’t in stock so we have to wait until next weekend before we can try it out. Hopefully we’re happy with it.

When the new TV arrives, if our old DLP is still working we’ll put it in the basement for occasional viewing … like when my husband wants to watch hockey but I want to watch one of my shows. LOL

Then … on Saturday our new washer and dryer arrived! Our old washer died in August and the drier wasn’t working well. So we spent all weekend installing the new machines. Literally .. all weekend! I didn’t do my first washer load until 4:30 pm!

We also had a friend over this afternoon AND I have a huge migraine! Sigh .. I think I need one of those destin florida vacations or something!

Do you ever have one of those weekend were you just keep going and going? I’m actually glad the weekend is almost over. Now I’m going to lie down and hope my migraine goes away … and watch 24 on TV! (if our TV keeps working I mean!)

I’m getting sick of these four walls

January 13, 2010 by Tricia

I think I’m starting to go a little stir crazy! I’ve mostly been stuck inside the house for the last couple of weeks and I’m tired of the view! LOL

As my regular readers know I have Crohn’s disease and I’ve been on medical leave from my job as an ER nurse for five years now. Unfortunately I can add a bad back into my list of woes now too. I found out about a year ago that I have a herniated disc in my lower back so the last year I’ve had a lot of back pain and a numb left thigh.

My back got really bad on Christmas evening. I’d spent the previous two or three days cleaning the house from top to bottom in order to prepare for three rounds of house guests during the holiday season and then standing cooking all day on Christmas day must have just been the last straw for my back.

Sitting during Christmas dinner was excruciating. You see when I stand too long it seems to make my tailbone go out and sitting or moving around becomes extremely painful. To top everything off, the next day I got new symptoms – my numb left thigh got even number and then my left thigh started burning – as if I was standing with my leg pressed against a radiator or something extremely hot.

So now if I stand for as little as 15 minutes my thigh starts burning! It’s an awful feeling! Luckily if I go and lie down on my side with my legs bent (sort of like a fetal position) the burning subsides.

Now … two weeks or more later I haven’t done a lot of sitting. I’m stuck inside the house because can’t stand or walk for long without everything getting worse … but, thanks to lying down a lot my back, tailbone and leg seem to be quite a bit better.

I did go out on Sunday … we bought a new front loading high efficiency washer and dryer set at a local furniture store. While we were there we looked at the new HDTV sets and some contemporary sofas. I know our TV is going to die sometime this year so we thought it would be a good idea to figure out which models we like … as for the sofas … well … if we ever do get around to renovating the basement I think I’ll bring our living room couch, sofa and chair set downstairs and get a new sofa for the living room.

We have NO money … but hey .. I can dream … and that little outing to the store- while it was hard on my back – was nice. It alleviated some of the boredom I’d been feeling by having to be stuck at home lying down all the time because of my bad back.

Have you ever been stuck at home for a few weeks (or months) due to illness or something like a bad back? I know for some people being stuck at home in bed for even a day or so can drive them nuts – so imagine weeks!

A quiet New Year’s eve and start to the year

January 4, 2010 by Tricia

Happy New Year!

I just realized that I didn’t write a New Years post to thank my regular readers and visitors for visiting this blog in 2009! Thank you for sticking around and leaving comments and being faithful visitors. I hope that my posts continue to entertain you in 2010.

So how did you celebrate New Years?

My husband and I had a quite evening. We’d had three rounds of guests in our house from the 20th of December through to the 31st and a family wedding, so once the last of our guests were safely on an airplane home we went into relaxation mode.

We had a nice dinner on New Years eve, followed much later by a glass of wine and a piece of Chocolate Fudge cheesecake at Midnight on New Years. During the evening we watched two movies that I’d taped earlier and then caught the tail end of Toronto’s New Years eve televised celebration just in time for the count down to midnight.

We spent Saturday and most of Sunday relaxing. I think we’re finally rested up and recovered from the holidays or at least I hope we are!

We hadn’t been planning to do anything over the weekend at all, but late yesterday afternoon we ran into one of our neighbors and they invited us in to have a drink for New Years and to see their latest renovations. They’d just finished redoing their kitchen and man, am I jealous! It’s beautiful and oh, they put in double copper sinks! I love the look of them! It seems like our neighbors are starting off the new year just right.

So … what did you do for New Years? Did you get together with friends and family or did you just have a quiet evening at home?
