Our absent neighbors

December 18, 2010 by Tricia

I was just thinking that we haven’t seen our new neighbors in a couple of weeks. Can you believe they haven’t even moved in yet? They bought the house next door in April or maybe early May and here in is near the end of December – 8 months later and we barely ever see them.

Still … it’s a big change from our old renter neighbors! I’m so glad they don’t live next to use any more. If they still lived next to us not only would we still be hiding behind locked screened doors (not just locked doors) but we’d have a few security cameras up around the house too. Those people were scary nasty!

I guess what I’m saying is that the new neighbors that actually own the house next door are a huge improvement over the criminal renter neighbors – even if we never see them. It’s not that bad that we don’t see them really … apparently they’re off at parties every weekend. My only fear is that once they actually move in they might start having parties in their house every weekend.

I think I missed out on some big sales today

December 18, 2010 by Tricia

I just happened to turn on the news and they were doing a report about how it’s “Super Saturday here in Canada” or for all I know, maybe it’s super Saturday all over North America.

I guess it’s a big shopping day full of super sales. I did not know that. Now I’m upset that I decided to put off the last of my shopping until Monday! Maybe I could have got a really good deal or two if I’d gone shopping today instead.

I know that I’ve been receiving some email flyers that have some amazing deals on desktop computers and other electronics. I was seriously tempted to buy an XBox the other day when I saw one on sale. I’d use it – but probably not quite often enough to make it worth buying- especially when we really don’t have any spare money right now.

Did you go shopping today? Did you catch any good sales?

It’s freezing! Brrrrr

December 15, 2010 by Tricia

I can’t believe how cold it is here in Toronto this week.

Monday was the worst. It was -27 Celsius (16.6 f) with the windchill (-18 C -.4 F without it which is cold enough!). Our furnace was on most of the day. On and off, on and off it went. On top of that, our power kept going out all day too, which of course is very scary when it’s that cold out.

I remember waking up just after 7 am because the furnace made a weird sound and I realized that the power had just gone out. I think that was the first time it went out that day and luckily it was only out for about five minutes. It didn’t go out again until about 3 pm and at that time it went on and off quickly three or four times. Then it went off again around 6 pm, then 7 pm and then at about 10 pm it went on and off several times over a half our period. Then it did that again at about 11 pm and then 11:30 pm. I think our power went out about 30 times on Monday.

We did call the power company and heard a recording about the power outages in our area. I guess the problem was called Auto renewal and they must have had power crews working on it all day. I think it actually took until some time on Tuesday to fix it because I know the power went out at least twice on Tuesday morning.

Every time the power went out on Monday I got a little more stressed. I kept being afraid that the power would be out for hours. The house would be freezing cold in no time if that happened!

Anyway … since Monday it’s been a little warmer, but it’s still extremely cold. It was -18 Celsius (-.4 F) with the windchill on Tuesday and I think it was -16 Celsius (3.2 F) with the Windchill earlier today as well.

If this keeps up I’m going to go rooting in my closet and try to find our electric blanket and if I can’t find it … well I just might go out and buy one! Our master bedroom is the coldest room in the house so anything that can keep us a little warmer as we try to sleep in this cold would help!

Has it been extremely cold in your area too? We’ve had some snow, but compared to the cold it’s nothing to complain about.

Another shopping trip

December 15, 2010 by Tricia

I’m just waiting for my husband to get home from work and then we’re going out shopping.

I need to go to Costco tonight. I saw my family doctor yesterday for a regular appointment but while I was there I told her about how I’ve been so very very cold lately as well as extremely tired and she seems to think that I might have Seasonal Affective Disorder. I think it’s my thyroid acting up … especially since my symptoms totally fit hypothyroidism and only partially fit S.A.D. but the light might be worth getting to help fix my sleep cycle if nothing else.

Anyway .. while we’re out shopping I might take a look at the women’s apparel section of the store … or perhaps talk my husband into going to another nearby store if I can. I need new clothes – badly! Everything I own is loose on me, I desperately need new pants, new tops, new sweaters and so on.

Plus .. who doesn’t love a shopping spree? LOL

So much cleaning and work to do this weekend

November 5, 2010 by Tricia

Brrr it’s going to be kind of cold here in Toronto this weekend. We might even get a little bit of snow this evening. I’m sure it will melt immediately, but I still don’t like the idea.

I had been hoping to get outside this weekend to do a little yard work. I still haven’t tidied up my garden beds and prepared them for winter. If I don’t do that soon I won’t be able to do it at all.

If it’s too cold to go outside I’m going to spend some time doing some major house cleaning. As I mentioned in recent posts I quit smoking in October and by next week I’ll be a month smoke free. It’s time to start cleaning the nicotine off the walls etc!

I have been cleaning on and off since I quit smoking – especially in the areas that I sit the most because I didn’t want to smell nicotine and start getting cravings. It certainly doesn’t take long for nicotine to discolor things! I cleaned off our door and the brass colored Schlage door knob and it was amazing how much lighter in color the door knob was and how shiny it was too.

I bought a big container of TSP to clean the walls. I know it’s going to be a big job, but once we get the house clean – walls and all, it’s going to look and smell so much better in here.

So .. I’m going to be busy this weekend indoors or out one way or the other. Who knows maybe I’ll get to work outside and inside.

What are your plans for the weekend?
