The Taste of the Danforth

August 7, 2011 by Tricia

My husband and I just got back from The Taste of The Danforth. It’s and Annual festival in my neighborhood celebrating all things Greek. Of course, that section of the Danforth is fairly multicultural now, so when visiting the “Taste of the Danforth” you can sample foods from India, Mexico, Greece, Thailand and pretty much anywhere as there are all kinds of restaurants along that 3 km stretch.

So .. my husband and I live in the Toronto Danforth area so we walked from our house to The Danforth and then walked up and down the whole Taste of the Danforth area. It was loud and crowded and it rained on us a few times. It was also quite hot and humid! After a while of walking I was almost looking forward to the rain to help me cool off!

In addition to sampling food at the Taste of the Danforth, my husband and went in to a few stores. The stores that normally close by 6 pm or so on Saturdays stay open until midnight during the Taste of the Danforth so you get to shop in stores that you normally wouldn’t. I actually went in a few stores that I normally wouldn’t have shopped in – my husband and I went in a record store that had vintage vinyl records, and we went into a few clothing stores.

We also went into one of the jewelery stores just to browse around. We were both jewelers when we met and we know the jeweler who owns the store we went in to so it was sort of a visit. we got into a discussion about jewelry fashion trends for moms while we were there because I’ve seen a few news stories lately about “push jewelery” as in a jewelery gift for a new mom. We certainly didn’t call it that when I was a jeweler!

We bought enough food that we were able to bring some home for tomorrow. Yum – Gyros and Spanokopita for dinner tomorrow too. Can’t wait. Do you like Greek food too? Do you go to local festivals in your area or home town?

My neighbors kids is making a huge amount of noise – daily!

August 3, 2011 by Tricia

My neighbors kids was making so much noise jumping around in the house next door yesterday that our furniture was vibrating! Can you believe that a little kid can make that much noise?

I’m at my wits end as to what to do about the noise the next door neighbors two year old is making. she’s slamming doors, thumping around and screaming and all the noise and vibrations are coming through to our house.

There must have been a total of 6 hours of noise yesterday. Not just a little bit of noise at a time or at low levels, no … it was noise that was loud enough to make my dog start barking and to be heard over three window air conditioners in my house! Oh and the couch that I sit on often was just shaking for a good part of that.

I’m starting to wonder if she’s making enough noise and vibrations to start making cracks in my walls. We have a triple light switch cover on the wall between our two joined house and I just noticed that it has a big crack in it that wasn’t there a week ago and the wall seems to have a crack too. I wouldn’t doubt it’s from this kid.

I’m so frustrated from all the noise. We’ve talked with her parents at least five times since the noise started in February and it got quieter a few times but it’s back up to unbelievable levels again and in our last conversation with the father on Sunday the father said – well, she’s just a two year old. Well .. next year she’ll just be a three year old .. and bigger and nosier … I’m scared!!!! I’m starting to think we’re going to have to call the police when the noise starts at 7 am or gets really excessive during the day.

Trying to work on my photography skills

July 17, 2011 by Tricia

I’ve been spending a lot of time over the last few months working on my photography. I’ve always been interested in photography, but last year I slacked off and didn’t take as many pictures and the ones that I did take I didn’t edit or use on my sites.

So this year I’ve made a major effort to both increase the amount of photos that I take when I go to events and to get them edited and uploaded to my computer quickly.

I’ve also been experimenting with cameras. I’ve been using both my Cannon Digital SLR and my new Nokia N8 12 megapixel camera. One camera that recently caught my eye was the digital casio. It’s 14 mp. I have to check it out more, but that sounds pretty good. Maybe it could be a travel camera.

Do you enjoy photography? Do you try to bring a camera with you where ever you go?

First time I’ve had a soft drink in 10 months!

July 16, 2011 by Tricia

You know what I did last night? I drank a Coca Cola for the first time in more than ten months. In fact, that’s the first time I’ve had a soft drink or any carbonated beverage since early September 2010.

I had to give up drinking soft drinks and any carbonated beverages last September because I’d started taking a medication for my migraines that has a weird side effect of making several different types of food and drinks taste quite different. For example, carbonated drinks tasted extremely salty rather than however they were supposed to taste. Actually, now that I think of it, anything that was very sweet tasting ended up tasting really salty. No wonder I lost about 15 pounds in a month or so back then!

Food and drink still tastes a bit off on this medication, but it tastes a lot closer to normal than it did ten months ago! Hmmm maybe I should celebrate that fact and go and check out Shari’s berries site and treat my husband and I to some chocolate covered strawberries? Yummy. Yeah, that would be a fantastic celebration of my taste buds starting to act a little more like they should.

For now I’ll just be happy that I can occasionally enjoy a soft drink again. It’s great that I don’t drink them anymore and I didn’t miss it all that much, but I really did enjoy my Coca Cola so it’s nice that I can have one if I really want one.

When’s the last time you had a soft drink? If you drink pop regularly, can you imagine going months without drinking your regular drink?

Walk the dog while taking a bike ride?

June 25, 2011 by Tricia

I keep seeing people riding by our house on their bikes with their dog trotting by their side. It seems like a great way to give the dog a bit of extra exercise.

I have to admit, we haven’t pulled our bikes out yet this year. My knee has been really bad this year. I was born with knee problems and now it’s turned into arthritis it seems. Yes I’m kind of young to get arthritis, but my leg bones aren’t positioned correctly – my tibia turns a little more outward than it should, so that messes up my knees. I have a feeling I won’t be riding my bike this summer – not until I get my knee feeling better.

My husband on the other hand would probably love to pull out his bike and go for a ride regularly. We live on a busy street, but in general the area is pretty good for bike riding, and if we wanted we could always get out the yakima bike racks and take our bikes to one of the fantastic bike trails in the area since we live near several fantastic interconnecting park systems throughout Toronto.

Our dog would love to trot along beside the bike. I’m certain of it .. oh and she’d be a fantastically tired puppy when the bike “trot” was finished. Perhaps she’d look all sleepy like she did when I took this picture of her back in January?
