I just can’t shake this cold

March 3, 2010 by Tricia

Man am I miserable. I’ve been suffering from my second cold in two months for the last week or so and it’s just not getting any better. I now have a cough and I’m not sure if it’s just from the cold or if it’s turning into bronchitis or something worse.

This sucks. My nose is stuffed, I’m coughing and my ears are blocked up too. Oh and every time I stand up a wave of dizziness comes over me. I’m just not anywhere near myself at all. I can’t think and I seem to be forgetting things easier. That’s one of the reasons why, along with the cough, I’m wondering if this is becoming pneumonia. I had pneumonia in 1998 for about two months and I swear it was the worst illness I’ve ever gone through. i was in a fog the whole time. I’m starting to feel that way again.

So … I’m trying to rest (mostly unsuccessfully), eat healthy, and I’m drinking juices and taking vitamins. Oh and I’m also drinking lots of hot drinks like coffee and tea as it soothes my throat. I’m also taking decongestants and yes, my allergy relief which I take every day anyway since I’m actually allergic to my dog.

I actually haven’t been sick with a cold or any kind of respiratory infection since 1998 when I had that bad case of pneumonia so I’d forgotten how bad colds hit me I guess.

Hopefully in a week or so I’ll be back to normal and with any luck I’ll stay cold fee from the rest of the winter. Man I hate this.

I can’t believe how fast my hair grows

February 19, 2010 by Tricia

I think I’ll be going shopping this weekend. As I mentioned in one of yesterdays posts I’m putting myself on a better skin care routine – moisturizing daily. So now I’m on the hunt for the best wrinkle cream.

Ok well maybe not wrinkle cream specifically … but really aren’t all moisturizers kind of anti-wrinkle since keeping your skin moisturized can help delay or minimize wrinkles?

I also have to get my haircut. I swear my hair grows so fast that I have to get my hair cut every four weeks or so otherwise it looks awful. Needless to say … it’s been about two months since my last haircut so yes, my hair looks bad! LOL

I actually think it might be my hairdresser. She used to cut my hair great, but I’ve noticed over the last year that even after a week my haircut doesn’t look as good as it used too … so maybe I need a new stylist too?

I’ve always had a hard time finding someone who can cut my hair well. I don’t know why … I have fairly nice hair – it’s fine with some wave and lots of body – not too difficult to work with or at least i don’t think it is … so why do I have so much trouble finding a good stylist? Do you have trouble finding someone who can cut your hair properly too?

Time to start some seedlings for the garden

February 11, 2010 by Tricia

I know it’s still winter, but this weekend I’ll be starting to get ready for gardening season. I only have about six weeks to wait before my garden starts to come alive! Crocus’ are usually the first flowers to come up in my garden … er lawn … and I should see some by the last week of March.

This weekend I’m going to start some seedlings indoors. Some plants like Asters, Impatiens and a few other flowers that need to be started in February so they’ll be big enough to plant out in the garden in May or so. Then in March I’ll start some other plants like Tomatoes and maybe cucumbers.

This will be the first time in a few years that I’ll have started seedlings indoors. I got lazy the last few years and just bought young plants from a local nursery, but man, that gets expensive! It’s much cheaper and much more satisfying if you start your own plants from seed.

I’ve also been looking into getting a compost tumbler. We have a compost bin in the back yard and we fill it up pretty good with kitchen scraps, leaves and other things that are great to compost, but I think we could make compost faster for the garden if we had a tumbler. Compost is great for the garden beds.

Do you garden? If you do, have you ever started your own plants at home? What kind of flowers or veggies do you grow from seed?

Hoping to go back to work soon

February 5, 2010 by Tricia

I’ve been hoping that sometime in the next few months I might be able to go back to work. My stomach has been feeling a lot better in the last two or three months so I’m hoping that my Crohn’s flare is finally beginning to die down.

Of course, as I sit here typing this out my abdomen is hurting. LOL I guess I’m having a bad day Crohn’s wise, but this if the first time it’s really acted up badly in a few months. If I cross my fingers and toes maybe it will pass and I’ll continue to feel better.

I can wish can’t I?

One reason I’m hoping to go back to work is that we’re struggling with just Chris, my husband, working. Oh sure I make some money via my websites and blogs, and it helps a lot, but lately it’s not quite enough to cover our monthly expenses.

So maybe in April or so I’ll be able to start back at work in my job as an ER nurse. I know I’d only be allowed to work short hours for the first few weeks before they put me back on my regular 12 hour shifts, but it’d be nice to get back there. I love my job.

I’ve also been thinking of looking into medical travel as well. Some of my nurse friends have been flight nurses. You know, going to a remote area or even another country to pick up someone who’s sick and bring them back home for care in the hospital or to recover from whatever ails them in their own home.

I’ve always thought that that would be something interesting to do for a while. Plus if I do go back to work my schedule would probably allow me to work part time in medical travel as I typically would work four 12 hour shifts and then have five days off … I could travel during those days off.

Ok maybe that’s too much for me to begin with, but if I do start to get healthy enough to go back to work that would be fantastic!

Have you ever been off work due to an illness for a lengthy period of time? Didn’t it feel good to get back to work again?

Don’t be afraid to ask for a discount

February 3, 2010 by Tricia

The call my husband and I have been waiting for finally arrived. It happened yesterday afternoon. Yes… our new TV is at the Best Buy warehouse and they’ll have it for us at store on Friday.

it’s been a long wait! Almost three weeks!

Why is it that whenever we buy something it turns out to be out of stock? That almost happened with the Home Theater System that we bought to go along with the new TV too.

I do have to commend the guys at Best Buy. They really came through for us. When we decided to get a new TV I started looking at various local stores on line in order to find the Best Buy and by far, Best Buy had the lowest prices on the models we were interested in.

Plus … once we’d decided on a TV and we found out it was out of stock they took $200 of the price for us and gave us a four year extended warranty for half price as well. Oh and the HDMI cable that we bought was sold to us at half price too

Then as we had to wait longer than they said we would for the new TV they offered us a deal on a home theater system. They weren’t just trying to sell us something, we brought up that we were looking for a new home theater system because the receiver on our old one had died a few years ago. So they took about $200 off the price of the Home Theater system we picked out too. Of course they didn’t just offer it … we asked if they “could do anything for us” and without hesitation they made the above offer.

Then as if that weren’t good enough, when the TV was going to be delayed by maybe two more weeks (turns out it was only one week more) they offered to give us 50% off on a new TV stand. Again … we had decided on our own that we needed a new TV stand because the one we have is built specifically for the DLP and a plasma might fall off of it with the way our dog jumps around! So as it turns out we picked out a new TV stand that was on sale for $399 and they gave it to us for half price so we saved another $200.

I know we bought a lot of stuff, but if our TV hadn’t been on back order we wouldn’t have saved more than $800 on the items we bought. So as it turns out, having to wait for our TV was a good thing.

I guess the moral of my story is that it never hurts to ask for a discount (we did ask, they didn’t just out right offer every single thing I listed above), especially if the item you’re thinking of purchasing is on back order!
