I’m a bad Canadian

June 2, 2010 by Tricia

I think I’m a bad Canadian … why? Well, I’m one of the few who doesn’t like hockey.

Shame on me! I know … Not liking Hockey is almost a crime here in Canada. LOL Really. Or well, it sure seems like it when it comes to playoffs in this house.

As the Stanley Cup finals were going on my husband would say “we have to watch this game tonight there’s only two Canadian teams left in the playoffs” and then in the semi finals he’d say the same thing about Montreal being the only Canadian team left. Now there’s no Canadian teams in the finals, but Chicago is where his brother lives so we have to root for Chicago. LOL

The only thing working to my husband benefit this week is that there are very few show that we normally watch on TV. Most had their finales last week or the week before last. Of course, even if all our regular shows were on and if my husband really wanted to watch a whole game he could use one of our other two TV’s … but there not HD so he doesn’t like that option. We could also PVR the game, but to him that’s just not the same.

I guess I’ll be stuck watching game three of the Stanley Cup Finals tonight but frankly I think I’d rather be looking up the best treatment for hemorrhoids instead.

Yup … I’m a bad Canadian.

Time to go shopping!

June 1, 2010 by Tricia

Man I need to go on a shopping spree! Now that the really hot weather has finally arrived I’ve discovered that my old summer wear just won’t cut it anymore.

My problem is that I don’t really like shopping all that much. Honest … yes I’m a strange woman. LOL

I desperately need some new clothes though. I think there’s more men’s clothing in our house than there is women’s wear because my husbands mom still buys clothes for him … like almost every time she comes for a visit.

I need to get some light summer pants, blouses, shirts, t-shirts and shorts … pretty much every kind of summer wear.

We were really short on spare cash last year so I made due with my older clothes, but I don’t think I can make due much longer. Maybe I’ll hit a mall sometime this coming weekend and see if I can find somethings that I like.

Do you need to go on a shopping spree too?

It’s going to be a busy summer!

June 1, 2010 by Tricia

Last summer my husband and I decided to try to go to as many local events as we could manage. Luckily we live in Toronto and there’s a lot of events and festivals happening throughout the summer. Pretty much every weekend actually!

We had so much fun last year that we decided to do it again this year. I think there’s a jazz festival beginning this week and then later in the month we’ll go to WoofStock (biggest dog festival in North America) and a few Ribfests.

That should fill up the weekends in June! When July and August come around we’ve got Carribanna (with cool stainless steel drums ) street festivals, Taste of the Danforth, more music festivals and so on.

Since we’re not planning a “real” vacation this summer I think this is the best way to get out and do things and have fun in the city. Most of the events are free or fairly inexpensive so it won’t cost us much at all.

What are your plans for the summer? Do you ever go to local events?

Taking advantage of this great weather

May 20, 2010 by Tricia

Last week it was cold, rainy and dreary here in Toronto, but this week it’s like summer has already arrived. It’s 27 C (80 F) right now and with humidity it feels more like 30 C (86 F)! That’s much warmer that it usually is in May.

Oh and I can’t really complain about the cool rainy weather last week. We’ve had great weather here in Toronto all year – no snow in February or March and spring like temps since early march – so how can I complain about a few bad days here and there? Besides – my beautiful garden needed the rain.

Since I knew the weather was going to be good this week and it looks good for next week too … last night my husband and I went to a new garden center shortly after Chris came home from work. I’d visited their website and found out that on Wednesdays they don’t charge tax! That means that along with taking advantage of some spring sales on plants we also got 13% off to total price.

We bought over $100 worth of annuals and veggies. Now I just have to plant them.

I was going to go out into the garden earlier today and start working on some of my planters, but it was so hot when I went out I decided to hold off for a while. Perhaps I’ll do a few planters this evening. Hey .. it’s light out until about 9 pm so I’ll have a few hours to work and it should be cooler … or well, at least the sun won’t be shining quite so brightly on my back as I work!

Since the weathers been so nice all Spring I thought we’d have the patio set up before now … but we haven’t hauled our glass and metal patio table and chairs out of the basement and storage area yet so I think we’ll probably do that this weekend. We’ll also get out our solar lights. I like to place them in the garden beds so that we have a little bit of ambient light at night.

Sometime this weekend I want to shop for some cushions for our patio chairs. They’re nice chairs, but a small cushion to lean on might be nice. I find my back hurts a bit if I sit in our patio chairs for too long. I might also look at outdoor rugs to place on the patio under the patio table.

Do you have plans for the long weekend? It’s Victoria Day here in Canada and I believe in the Us it’s Memorial day so I’m sure a lot of people are going up to the cottage, camping or getting together with family. We don’t have any family or travel plans … just the gardening plans. Our weekends have been pretty busy over the last few weeks so it might be nice to just stick around home and get some things done that we’ve been putting off – ie like putting together the patio table and chairs etc.

Zap your Zits?

May 15, 2010 by Tricia

When I was out shopping earlier today I spent some time browsing in the cosmetic section. I was trying to find Bag Balm .. a specific brand, because my heels are so dry and I know the Bag Balm will fix them up in no time. Gotta get ready for summer.

While I was in the cosmetics and beauty supple department of the store I came across this odd new treatment for acne … it’s a blue acne light thing. I guess you just kind of zap your zits with this blue light and they heal up fast.

I don’t really suffer from acne so I wasn’t interested in buying, but I found it interesting. Have you ever tried one of these things? Do they work?
