Flag and flowers

Clematis

These lovely clematis grow at the front of my house, on the left hand corner if you’re facing the house, and the flowers wrap around the side of the house.

I didn’t realize when I took this photo that our Canadian flag would show up in the photo, nor would I ever have thought that it would make such a lovely background. I was quite pleased when I spied the flag in the photo.

Have you ever been concentrating on taking a photo of someone or something and then discovered that was was in the background was almost as interesting as the intended subject? I love it when that happens.

All kinds of Tulips

I think for many people, when they think of spring flowers they think of tulips. Am I right?

I grow several different types of tulips. There are fringed ones, lily tipped, long stem, short stemmed or dwarf tulips, regular garden variety tulips … I’m sure there’s another type or two that I grow.

Did you know that some tulips bloom in early spring, others in mid spring and that there are also late spring varieties? I grow some of each so that my garden is filled with tulips for the majority of the spring season.

I believe the white tulip that I included above is a lily tipped tulip. Some of it’s outer petals are longer than the rest and they arch up above the flower elegantly.

Do you grow tulips in your garden? Do you sometimes buy bulbs that have been forced so that you can have tulip or other spring bulbs blooming inside your house in late winter?

Gardeners, Plant and Nature lovers can join in every Sunday, visit As the Garden Grows for more information. GTS participants remember to check in at As the Garden Grows each week so that we’ll know you made a new post!

Going to the In-Laws this weekend

February 22, 2008 by Tricia

I think we’re supposed to get together with the in laws this weekend.

It’s my husbands oldest sisters birthday and I’m pretty sure we’re supposed to go to my parent in laws for a dinner.

Of course we’ll bring the puppy along with us. I suppose if we were only going for a few hours she could stay at home, but we’ve got to go out of town to see the relatives so we’re bound to be away from home for several hours.

Midnight our Lab puppy

I can’t leave my little girl at home now can I?

In fact, since we’ve been having so many crazy snow storms lately there’s always the chance that our day trip could turn into an overnight trip. There’s a section of our trip that’s really dangerous to drive through when it’s snowing hard or just when the weathers bad in general. We’ve been caught in that area in bad fog, blowing snow and wind storms and it’s pretty scary.

I guess if we are going to the in laws I’ll pack up all of our travel gear just in case it ends up being an overnight stay. That means bringing extra food for the puppy too!

If I actually liked going to my in laws it wouldn’t be quite so bad ….

When can I stop shoveling?

This weeks theme is Heavy

We’ve had a few snow storms here in Toronto in the last week or two and I’ve been out shoveling the heavy snow! I guess it’s good exercise but it’s awful hard work when the snow is packed and heavy. My back ached each time.

Look how high the snow is on my tiny front lawn:

It’s almost as high as our car!

We’re supposed to get more snow over the weekend and next week. I don’t know where we’ll put it! The snow was blowing so hard the other night that you could barely see the led tail lights of the few cars trying to drive on the streets!

Please visit two of my other blogs that are participating in the Photo Hunt – We’ve had a lot of snow this week here in Toronto and if you want to see some snow damage in my garden take a look at As the Garden grows, then if you want to see what my puppy finds heavy over at Tricia’s Musings.

The CN tower – Tall, Long and Narrow

This weeks theme is Narrow

Look Way UP

This is Toronto’s CN Tower … it’s sometimes mistakenly called “The needle” – as in Seattle’s “Space Needle” – by our American visitors and while it does look a bit like a long, tall narrow needle it’s real name is the CN Tower. CN stands for Canadian National.

Up until September of 2007 it was the tallest free standing structure in the world. I think it’s title has been replaced by another tower called the Burj Dubai which is located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The circular part near the top of the tower holds a restaurant and observation decks. One of the observation areas has a glass floor and let me tell you it’s pretty scary to stand on and look down! The tower is exactly 1815 feet and 5 inches tall. You can get to the top by riding one of the elevators that travel up the outside of the tower, or by climbing many many flights of stairs.

It’s certainly and impressive structure that draws many tourists each year.
