4 Custom Things Worth Buying For Your Pet

April 8, 2013 by Trish

For many people, their pet is like another family member. They love them like a family member. They feed them well, they spend time with them. They provide love, support, encouragement, and entertainment for each other.

But there is one big different between our pets and our other family members. And no, I’m not talking about their furry faces, or even their doggy breath. I’m talking about the amount of money we are willing to spend on them. We absolutely love our pets. And we’re happy to spend the money that we need to on them. We want what’s best for our family, and we want the best for our pets. But when we are able to, we don’t mind seeking out opportunities to save money on things for our pets.

So where do we draw the line? When is it okay to save money on things for our furry friends, and when is it better to spend a little bit more and get those custom things for our pets?

In most cases I don’t feel that customized items are necessary for pets. They don’t know if their doggy dish says their name on it, and they don’t care if their kitty color has their favorite color rhinestone. But in some cases it really is worth it to spend a bit more to get customized, higher quality items for our pets.

Here are 4 customized items worth buying for your pet:

1. Custom Pet Enclosures

If you are only going to purchase one customized item for your pet I would go with a custom pet enclosure. A baby gate just isn’t going to work here! If you have a very basic shaped backyard, you can purchase high quality premade pet enclosures and those should work just fine for you. But if you have an irregular shaped yard, you should definitely look into a custom pet enclosure. These enclosures are surprisingly affordable, and they can be customized to fit the size and shape that you need for your specific yard or house.

2. Customized Pet Training

Yes, your dog can absolutely learn to sit, lay down, heel, etc through your typical run of the mill pet training. But customized pet training is exactly what it sounds like: customized. So, your trainer will alter the training plan and schedule according to your and your pet’s needs. So if Spot needs a bit more time to learn how to heel, then you and your trainer can take that extra time to make sure he gets it. Or if your dog is ahead of the game on learning to roll over, you can skip that portion. Either way, you are not paying for training your pet doesn’t need, and you are not having to rush through portions that he may need some extra help with. You and your pet get completely tailored training.

3. Custom Pet Portraits

If you really are one of those people that view your pet as a true member of the family, then why not capture their full personality and beauty with custom pet portraits? It’s not like you can bring in your cat into Sears portrait studio. But just like with any other member of your family, you want to remember the different stages of their life, and you want to have high quality pictures of them to remember them by. So, you can hire a photographer that specializes in pet photography. They will be accustomed to working with animals, and they will be able to get great shots of that extra member of your family (with other members of your family also if you like) that you will cherish for years.

4. Custom Bedding

This one is simple. You want a comfortable bed, and so does your pet. So first and foremost, make sure to get a good, sturdy, comfy bed for your animal. You may not want to go all-out and completely customize your pet’s bed with their name on it, but you do want to buy a “customized” bed to fit your pet’s needs. Make sure you are getting the right size for your pet. You can also customize the color of it to match the rest of your home.

Update Your Decor For Spring

April 4, 2013 by Trish

Officially, spring started on Wednesday, March 20th. However, many of our minds are likely already filled with thoughts of upcoming warm weather activities at home and on the road. While spring is a good time to hit the road with your family for a few days, it is also a good time to take care of those projects around your home that may have been put on the shelf during the cold winter weather. One of those may even include updating the décor of your home. Below are some of the main areas you may want to consider when thinking of changing the look of a single room or your entire home.

Wall Treatments

Perhaps one of the easiest and most cost effective ways, to change the look of a space is by adding a new coat of paint to it. If your walls are currently the egg shell white that most of us see as a blank canvas, grab your supplies and get to work. However, if there is currently color on the wall, make sure you get a primer that will cover the color prior to you applying the new look.  Keep in mind if you have a feature like vaulted ceilings it may be best call in a professional to handle the height and specific challenges of those ceilings.

Flooring Treatments

Updating the look of your floors may cost a significant amount depending on the size of the area you are looking to change. Prior to shopping for new flooring consider the type that will compliment your desired outcome the most and work best for the use of the room. For example, if you are redoing your living room and have young children, you may want to consider carpeting to limit the risk of any possible injuries. Once you decide on the type of flooring, measure the space to determine how much it will cost.

Window Treatments

Another fun way to update your décor is by changing out the window treatments. For example, you may want to consider comfortex cellular shades. This type of treatment has a honeycomb cell construction and is good for rooms that need extra insulation.

Changing the décor of your space can be a fun and exciting way to start the spring. Do a little planning prior to shopping to determine exactly what you need and most of all enjoy the new look!

Three Lawn Care Tools Every Homeowner Should Have

April 1, 2013 by Trish

As a homeowner, keeping your property looking neat and tidy is a necessity. Not only does a clean yard look better, but most municipalities have rules and regulations requiring property owners to keep their land in order. Many individuals love gardening and lawn care, while to others, it’s nothing but a chore. Regardless of what category you fall into, below are three lawn care tools that every homeowner should have in his or her arsenal. With a riding mower, a leaf mulcher, and a lawn edger, you can be sure that your lawn and yard will always look great with minimal time and effort.

A Riding Mower

A riding mower isn’t an absolute necessity, but mowing the lawn is much easier when you can guide a riding mower around your yard without even breaking a sweat. However, for homeowners with large properties, a riding lawnmower is a must-have. With vast areas of grass to cut, it would take hours to get the job done with a traditional mower. Even small yards can benefit from a riding mower because of the time they save. No matter how big or small your yard may be, consider investing in a riding mower. It will save you a considerable amount of time and energy and will keep your yard looking fresh and well-trimmed.

A Leaf Mulcher

A vacuum leaf mulcher is an invaluable tool to have at any time of the year. Whether you’re using it to clear your yard of leaves in the fall or to pick up weed seeds as you cut the grass in the summer, a leaf mulcher that attaches to your riding mower is the ultimate lawn accessory. The powerful vacuum on this versatile tool will easily collect any leaves in your path as you tow the easy-to-attach mulcher system behind your riding mower. Plus, the leading models of these mulchers fold flat for easy storage, so when you’re finished tending to the lawn, the mulcher won’t take up too much valuable shed or garage space.

A Lawn Edger

Once your grass is cut and the leaves on your property have been vacuumed up or mulched, a lawn edger is the ideal tool to put the finishing touch on your picturesque property. Your sidewalks, curbs, and walkways will look spectacular once you’ve been through the area with an edger. A proper edging complements the appearance of a lush, green, clean lawn.

While there are certainly other lawn care tools that can prove to be beneficial, a riding mower, a leaf mulcher, and a lawn edger are three of the most important to have at your disposal.

The Pros And Cons Of Shopping For Shoes Online

March 25, 2013 by Trish

I Like ShoesThe web has made it easier than ever to shop for whatever you want from wherever you want, whenever you want to buy it. Of course, this does have its advantages, but it also has its downfalls, especially depending on what you’re shopping for.

Shoe shopping can be an area that’s a bit tricky to navigate when it comes to online shopping. So before you jump on your favorite online shoe retailer, take a minute to read these pros and cons of purchasing your new kicks from the web.

Pro: Convenient

Obviously, the biggest benefit to shopping online is that it’s convenient! You can literally shop in your pajamas just by jumping onto your computer. Browse through hundreds of stores if you’d like all within just a few short minutes to find exactly what you’re looking for in your next pair of perfect shoes.

Con: Sizing

The only problem with browsing through thousands of pairs of shoes online and purchasing with a click of a button is that you don’t have a chance to try them on before you buy them. Unless you’re particularly familiar with a given brand, it can be difficult to pinpoint an exact size that will fit your foot. Widths, lengths and even heights can vary from what the online description says, and you never know which shoes will end up killing your feet and which will be really comfortable.

Make sure that if you buy shoes online, the site offers a return policy. You should at least be able to exchange a product that you find is not in the right size or isn’t quite the style you were looking for.

Pro: Price Comparison

With the Internet, it’s simple to compare prices on any given product. Say you find a pair of shoes that you love – all you have to do is perform a Google search on the brand name and the particular shoe you’re looking for, and hundreds of results will come up for stores that all sell the same product at different prices.

You can click around until you find a price that’s low enough for you, then order from that site.

Con: Hard to Find Reputable Sites

The issue with price comparison when shopping online is that you might find what you think is a brand-name product at an incredibly low price, but if it’s not on a reputable site, you may order the product, send your money and never receive your shipment. This happens far too often in online retail.

Many not-so-reputable websites can be spotted in a single glance – make sure the English and grammar are correct and check for any sort of secure payment logo (like PayPal) that verifies your payment is secure. In general, be on the lookout – if a price looks too good to be true, it probably is.

And be wary when sending online payments in general – it’s better to use a credit card than a debit card, make sure you’re saving receipts and never, ever hand out your bank account information on the web.

Pro: More Options

If you go online shopping for one shoe in particular, it’s very likely that you’ll end up finding about 10 alternate choices that could end up being better for you in the long run. Did you log on to search for a particular brand of running shoes, only to find a better one? It happens more than we know.

The truth is, the web opens up so many more options than shopping in a store. Chances are, you’re also more likely to find items that aren’t in stock in storefronts ready to ship from web retailers. It’s just how online shopping seems to work.

Con: Easy to Overspend

With more options available comes more temptation to buy, of course! With the slew of choices you have in shoes online, you may go into your online shopping experience with the intent of buying one, and only one, pair, and end up with 10 that you don’t actually need.

Shop online with a purpose, have a general idea of what you’re looking for and promise to limit yourself to buying just one or two pairs and you’ll be golden.

Essentials For The Modern Small Bathroom

March 18, 2013 by Trish

These days the bathroom has taken much more significance when it comes to planning a home’s look.

Before, they were often overlooked as a lot of our UK bathrooms are a little on the small side in truth, so many people didn’t really think about them as anything more than a quick stopping point during the day.

Nowadays though people have realised that the bathroom is a great room in the house, whether it be for seeking a moment of solitude in an otherwise hectic day or just as another room to add the homeowner’s own unique styles to.

Combined Vanity Furniture

You want to have everything in your bathroom, cupboards, toilet, sink – the lot, but alas space is not really a luxury you can afford in a small bathroom.

Combined vanity furniture is the way to go when it comes to saving room. As the name implies, it is the combination of your usual toilet essentials into one space saving whole – perfect when you’re operating in a small space.

Bi Fold Shower Enclosure

The only thing you then need in order to make sure your small bathroom has all the usual essentials is a place to wash.

Bi fold shower enclosures are great as a space saving option as the way the door folds in the middle and swings inwards and across the shower, means the door doesn’t have to swing outwards and hence use some of the space that you could otherwise utilise in other ways.

Bathroom Furniture

The use of a vanity unit may then enable you enough room for a further piece of bathroom furniture if you are lucky – this can be used to store your remaining every day essentials.

Perhaps to better utilise the space instead of going for a separate mirror and cabinet, you can combine the two with a mirror cabinet.

Towel Radiators

In smaller bathrooms a nice sized radiator was often impossible to go for due to the size it would take.

However towel radiators are becoming increasingly popular. Not only do they provide the heat the room requires, it warms up your towels nicely, and most importantly doesn’t take up a lot of room.

Towel radiators come in electric as well as more traditional options, meaning they can operate independently from your overall central heating unit and they come in a range of designs too.

A few Accessories to finish

Depending on the remaining space available, you can then opt to pick up a few extras such as toilet roll holders, a bin for every day waste, dispensers to add a little extra style to the room and maybe even a bathroom mat.

You might only have a small bathroom then, but thanks to space saving towel radiators, showers and vanity units, you can still give your bathroom a great modern look.

Louisa Jenkins is an interior design expert. She offers advice on a number of topics including ways for people with small bathrooms to still give them a modern look – she believes that towel radiators and other bathroom essentials can still be used in a bathroom, whatever the size,  to make them one of most eye-catching rooms in the entire house.
