I’m so bored!

September 23, 2009 by Tricia

I’ve noticed over the last month or so that I’m becoming really bored with being at home. The problem is there isn’t much I can do about it!

I’m stuck at home because I’m sick and since I don’t feel all that well most of the time I can’t really get out and do things – not as much as I’d like to any way!

I try to keep busy working on my various website and blogs, doing a bit of gardening when I can and of course playing with my Labrador Retriever … but I’m bored.

Maybe I should look into one of those Cancun packages and plan a vacation? I’ll be a change of scenery would do me good! Only problem is we are so strapped for cash I can really only dream about a vacation right now. I have been working on some things that might change our financial picture for the better – hopefully by the new year … so maybe if that happens we’ll be able to go on a holiday … just in time to get away from the horrid cold weather here in Toronto. LOL

Do you ever get bored with your life? What do you try to do to stop the boredom?

Losing weight again

September 23, 2009 by Tricia

I was at the doctors yesterday and as usual she made me do my monthly weigh in. Why she weighs me every visit I don’t know … maybe she’s afraid that with my Crohn’s I’ll have a sudden drop of weight … it’s happened before.

The worst Crohn’s related weight loss I had was shortly after we moved into our house back in 2001. I lost 40 lb in one month! Worst of all was the fact that I didn’t need to lose any weight so I was really really skinny … like underwear falling off skinny. LOL I certainly didn’t need to use diet pills that year!

The ironic thing is that I’ve been in a Crohn’s flare for over 5 years now (yeah it won’t settle down!) and I actually gained a bit of weight during this time … probably due to feeling so awful and not moving around as much. Also, some of the meds I was on caused me to gain a bit of weight. Luckily – over the last few visits at my doctors I’ve learned that that little bit of weight I gained is coming off and with any luck I’ll be back to the weight I should be for my height and body type very soon.

Now that I’ve started losing weight again I just hope that my body doesn’t go into overdrive and makes me loss it really fast. That would be unhealthy!

Last week was cold, this week it’s hot and humid! Strange Weather

September 23, 2009 by Tricia

It’s hard to believe that today is the second day of Autumn! It’s 27 C outside and with humidity if feels like 35 C (95 F). Now those are summer temps!

The weather’s been so weird this year. Last week it was getting so cool at night (6 C (42 F) that I was thinking about bringing in my tropical plants like the Orchids, passion flower, jasmine and other vines and putting the patio furniture away for the rest of the year. We even took the air conditioners out of the windows last Sunday so that the house would be warmer. LOL and now we’re having a mini heat wave!

It’s been so humid in the house that the chewable calcium tablets that I put out each day to remind me to take them have gotten all wet from soaking up the humidity! That’s a first!

I guess I shouldn’t complain about humid weather though … I heard that people in some parts of Colorado had snow yesterday! With any luck we won’t see snow here until December or late November at the very earliest.

How’s the weather in your area?

Lovely white phlox in the garden

Well summer’s almost over but you wouldn’t know it if you took a look at my garden.

Most of my plants are still blooming and I expect them to keep blooming and looking fairly nice until late October or even later. Some years I’ve still had roses blooming well into December!

This year my Phlox has been doing well. Often it blooms and then the leaves get covered in powdery mildew and the stalks die down only to regrow slowly hindering further blooms. This year however my Phlox did well and wasn’t affected by powdery mildew very much (my roses on the other hand were!).

Here’s what my Phlox looks like in bloom –

White Phlox 5

Isn’t it lovely? The flower heads are on stalks of about three and a half feet tall and there are usually several blooms on each stalk. I planted the Phlox near my Patio so that I can enjoy the flowers while I sit at my patio table. I also like that they are white flowers … you can still see them fairly well at night so they help highlight the garden.

Do you garden? What’s blooming in your garden right now?

Covered in Bruises!

September 15, 2009 by Tricia

As most of my regular readers know, we have a Labrador Retriever. She just turned two, two weeks ago, so she’s finally starting to calm down a bit, but not nearly enough for me!

She’s a pretty good dog, fairly obedient and definitely regards me as the Alpha in the house … except every once in a while she’ll try to pull one over on me.

Her quest for power usually takes place in the evening when I’m lying on the couch watching TV. She’ll jump up on the couch beside me and make her wookie (whooo whoo, grughhh) sounds to indicate that she wants to play and doesn’t want to take no for an answer. Then she’ll try to climb on top of me or over me to reach the top of the pillow that I’m usually lying on while on the the couch.

Once she’s perched near my head she’ll sit there contentedly, occasionally turning around to lick my face, ears and neck. Labs are kind of slobbery so I need to wipe my face after a lick attack!

The bruises I’m getting are from her walking over me when she’s instant on playing and getting really close to me so that she can give me a lick attack.

When she tries to do this I usually try to hold her back by putting my leg up to bar her from climbing over me but this past week she just keeps coming! She’ll even fake me out by looking like she’s just going to sit down beside me when I’ve said no and once I relax she just jumps on me! She’s a smart dog!

My husband thinks she just does this because she “loves” me … but I think it’s a little bit of doggy dominance coming out. As I said above she’s a fairly obedient (yet hyper and excitable) dog.

She weighs about 70lb and while my husband doesn’t seem to find her walking on him painful it really hurts me when she walks on my legs, stomach and even my chest. There’s been many a time when I’ve woken in the morning wondering why one of my boobs is sore and then I remember that my dog walked on it the night before! LOL

I also take medications for my Crohn’s disease that make my blood a little thinner so I’m more prone to bruising as it is, let alone having a large dog jumping all over me.

I have to find a way to stop her from jumping on me like this. When she does manage to walk all over me this is the only real time that she is being Alpha or has any kind of dominance over me.

Any suggestions from other dog owners out there?
