Frugality | When Saving Money Is Not The Answer

October 2, 2012 by Trish

Many people adhere to the rule that if something is broke you should try to fix it, it’s a money saving strategy that dates back to the good old days of darned stockings, but should some money saving tactics be left to the good old times? When saving starts to waste money maybe it’s time to rethink tactics.

Time Wasted on Freebies

Freebies are a great marketing gimmick; they lure people in, especially those intent of saving at every possible opportunity. But freebies are seldom free. Whether it be the time taken to find the freebie on the internet, printing the coupon which will cost you in ink, time away from work or other activities to collect the freebie, or even gas to get to the location of the freebie, it’s not always worth making the effort. Unless the freebie happens to be on the street as you walk passed, handed to you straight away with no hint of “maybe you should just come in and look at our other items” guilt trip, then don’t think it’ll be saving you any money.

Saving Money Equaling Poor Performance Products

It’s fairly obvious that buying a cheaper product will often mean less time and cost has gone into producing said product, and as a result, it may not be as reliable or long lasting as one purchased for a slightly higher price. That said it is sometimes easy to be taken in by clever branding and pressured into buying something because of the pretty packaging. Take stock, get advice from others buying the product, but don’t always go for the lowest priced item as you may be disappointed or even have to pay out more to replace it when it stops working after a short period.

Frugality Versus a Good Time

If living a frugal lifestyle means hardly ever eating out or taking a trip away, when it comes to that special occasion, make it worthwhile and eat out or book somewhere which costs a bit more. If the result of wanting to save money is in an unpleasant meal or dirty hotel room then the chances are enjoyment won’t be high on the list for this one off experience, it’s about knowing which instances to stop the penny pinching.

Times When Savings Are Useful

There are of course times when being a savings expert can help make life a little easier. Fitting in errands whist on the way home may not take up much time that could be spent earning money or enjoying family time, equally the extra time taken to make a large batch of one meal so some of it can be frozen for nights when time is short, may save a lot of money on time-reducing takeaways or ready meals.

Sometimes the rule of if broken fix it has its place, it may be cost effective to sew up a ripped skirt to save money on buying a new one, but not necessarily on socks which can be bought for less than the cost of the time taken to repair them. Equally when it comes to enjoyment and offers, it might be best to spend a little more on one offs to reap the saving returns in the long run.

Mouth Ulcers – What They Are and How to Cure Them

October 1, 2012 by Trish

Mouth ulcers are a common condition that can affect anyone, although women and young adults tend to have them more often.

They are caused by a laceration of the mucus in your mouth, which becomes the painful sore spot that hurts inside your cheek.

They are not contagious as usually they are not an infection, therefore you won’t get them if you drink from the same glass someone else has used, or if you kiss someone who has an ulcer.

Mouth ulcers clear themselves usually within 2 weeks, but if it isn’t gone in 3 weeks you might want to consider seeing a doctor.

Usually ulcers happen occasionally, however some people keep getting them fairly often, and in this case they are called recurring mouth ulcers.

Causes of Occasional Ulcers

Usually these are caused by biting the inside of your mouth while you are eating, a sharp tooth or food, or even if you brush your teeth incorrectly.

Stress and anxiety can make your more prone, although don’t go thinking that all your ulcers mean you are stressed!

Food can also be a culprit apparently, it’s said that chocolate, cheese, strawberries, coffee and a few others can increase the likelihood of mouth ulcers.

If you stop smoking you might find you have a temporary increase in ulcers, which is due to the fact that the body is dealing with the change in chemicals. Should this happen, don’t let it put you off. Not smoking is the right thing to do, and the raise in ulcer frequency is only temporary.

Ulcers tend to go away on their own, but if you want mouth ulcer treatment there are remedies you can find easily online or in drug stores.

Recurrent Ulcers

Some people have to deal with those annoying sores regularly. In this case it’s worth seeing a doctor to determine the cause, but here are some.

You lack iron. When your body doesn’t have enough of it from your diet, your red blood cells can’t carry as much oxygen, so you tend to feel tired, dizzy or not very energetic. Such lack of iron can also cause mouth ulcers.

Vitamin B12 deficiency. This can also cause shortness of breath and tiredness, as well as mouth ulcers. Natural sources of Vitamin B12 are eggs, milk, meat (especially liver), poultry and fish, so this can be fixed once again by balancing your diet.

B12 is a bit harder to get if you are vegetarian, so if your doctor thinks B12 deficiency is the cause of your ulcers, you might need to obtain food supplements.

There are also some diseases that can cause recurrent mouth ulcers, but this is something I’d leave to a doctor to decide.

Have you found any remedies that work?

6 Good Habits Worth Developing

September 30, 2012 by Trish

“Watch your habits, for they become character.” It is important to watch our habits. It is also important to develop good habits. Developing good habits can give us better health, more time, and more fulfillment in our lives.

Here are 6 habits that can make a huge impact in your life:

1. Exercise

It is suggested that we get at least 30 minutes of exercise a day. Daily exercise is such a great habit to develop. It can help you relieve stress, give you time to think and brainstorm, give you more energy, etc. It also releases much needed endorphins into your body that can help you feel good all day long.

30 minutes a day is ideal, but start with whatever you have time for. Even taking the stairs instead of the elevator is a good start! On top of that, eat healthy and drink 8 glasses of water a day. Between these 3 things you should find yourself more energetic, healthier, and less stressed.

2. Get Up Early

It is important to get your sleep. So whenever you can fit that in is great. But it is even more beneficial to go to bed early and get up early. It has been said that an hour of sleep before midnight is worth two after midnight. So, the earlier you can get to bed the more impactful your sleeping time will be. On top of that, getting up early is a great habit. It’s good to get your day started early. The early bird catches the worm!

3. Set Goals

Setting goals is a great habit to develop. Goals help you have something to always be working towards. They help to give you more purpose in your day-to-day activities. They help give you the “why’s” behind what you’re doing. It is always good to have something to work towards. Set daily goals for yourself. What do you want to accomplish today? On top of that, set weekly, monthly, yearly, 5-year, and even lifetime goals. Check your goals often and track your progress. Reevaluate when needed.

4. Save Money

We could all use more money, right? Well instead of always waiting for that next big raise or job opportunity, take it into your own hands. It is recommended by many financial experts to save at least 10% of your income (and some experts recommend saving even more). Set up a budget, and make sure that budget includes at least 10% of your income going to savings. Then stick to your budget and savings plan. Put that money in a separate savings account and don’t touch it unless it’s an emergency or the goal you set the account up for. Whether you use those savings for retirement, a rainy day, or even a car or vacation, you will learn better self control, and experience more financial freedom if you can get in the habit of saving.

5. Say Thank You

Saying thank you is another wonderful habit to develop. Recognizing what others are doing for you, and looking for opportunities to express thanks, will help you develop a positive outlook. It will help you feel happier. And, as you say thank you to others, your newfound happiness and positivity will rub off on them. It will help everyone around you to have a happier attitude, and it will strengthen the relationships that you have with others.

6. Read

Growing in wisdom is something that we should all be doing as we move along in our lives. And reading is one of the best ways to do that. Reading can help us learn new things, develop creativity, expand our vocabulary, and create new skills for ourselves. But it doesn’t just have to just be education-centered books. Novels, biographies, even cookbooks or design books can help to expand our minds and our creativity. Whether it be daily, weekly, or even monthly, get in the habit of reading often.

How to Detect a Water Leak

September 29, 2012 by Trish

How to Detect a Water Leak

It is possible that any leak around your home can end up costing you loads of money, so it is best to catch it early and get it fixed as soon as possible. If you suspect you have a leak, then you should call a Water Leak Detection service because they will be able to detect and locate the leak for you with the use of their equipment, for example, infrared imaging. Listed below are a few ways to detect an underground leak for yourself; although, if you are still not sure whether you have a leak, then it is best to get some professional advice before a potential leak gets worse.

Increased water usage

If you have noticed an unusual increase in your water usage, then it is possible that you have a leak. If you suspect you have a leak, then you can record your water usage on a daily basis and keep track of you bills; this may give you a clearer idea on your situation and whether you think it is necessary to call a Water Leak Detection service. This service will help identify where the leak is coming from because it could be inside or outside you house.

Unusually damp areas

Another way to detect a leak is to check for unusually wet areas outside. As well as damp, these areas can also be moldy, mossy and surrounded by dry areas. The wet areas could be a sign of an underground leak and this should be checked by a professional to prevent any potential damage occurring.

Sinkholes

Sinkholes are also a potential sign of an underground leak. Sinkholes are a dip in the land that have been formed by eroded underground rock or a frequent exposure to water. They will also suggest that your leak is outside and not inside. If you have a sinkhole, then it does not mean you definitely have an underground link; it could have been caused by a number or things, for example, it can be caused by heavy rainfall. However, if you are uncertain on how the sinkhole has formed, then it would be worth contacting a Water Leak Detection service.

Unclean water

Rusty or dirty water can be another sign of an underground leak. However, like the previous points, this may not be the result of an underground leak and it could be related to a completely different issue, for example, rusty pipes. Although, it is still worth getting it checked out whether you believe it is an underground leak or not.

It is best to contact a Water Leak Detection Service for professional help if you suspect a leak. Also, the longer you wait to do something about the leak, the more money it may cost you and the more damage it can create. If there are any signs of unusual water usage, damp areas, sinkholes or unclean water, then it is possible that you have an underground leak and it should be examined by a Water Leak Detection service.

How to Increase Bathroom Storage Space

September 29, 2012 by Trish

With sales of grooming products soaring (especially mens) fitting all your age defining skin serums, exfoliating lotions and bronzing creams into your bathroom can be challenging.  Add to that piles of towels, bathroom cleaning products, laundry and jumbo packs of toilet roll; and your bathroom will feel less like a spa sanctuary and more like a clutter haven.   Luckily there are lots of ways to wash away your storage woes in even the smallest of bathrooms….

1)      Built in cabinets

Built in bathroom cupboards put your square footage to good use because they can be built to the exact specification of your bathroom, making the most of oddly shaped spaces.   The size, shape, length, width and thickness can all be altered to fit.  A recessed built in cabinet is the best choice for conserving precious floor space and any unused drywall space is an opportunity for this storage perk.  Free standing bathroom cabinets are another option, and if you’re on a tight budget these are significantly cheaper.  Medicine cabinets are often wall mounted alongside the mirror, but above the toilet is a good spot for maximising a small space.  Whatever style of cabinet you go for today’s cabinets are masters of organisation, with more and more amenities like built in drawer dividers, cosmetic trays, appliance garages (that hide but keep hand things you use everyday like hair dryers and electronic toothbrushes) and even wardrobe-like spaces for hanging clothes and laying out ties.

2)      Vanity Cabinet

A vanity cabinet is a great storage solution because it combines a wash basin and countertop with closed shelving below.   It also gives a bathroom a more stylish look because it hides the sink plumbing.  When choosing a vanity cupboard go for one with ample shelves and drawers so you can store lots of lotions and potions.  This is especially the case if you have teenage girls.

3)      Towel rails

Towel rails or ladders are the best way to keep towels off the floor.  There are lots of stylish designs these days so if you want your rail to be a feature point then be bold and go for an unusual curved or spiral design.  If stepping out of the bath into a warm and toasty fluffy towel sounds like your idea of heaven then go for a heated rail.

4)      No space left behind

If you want a minimalist look why not build some storage into the bath itself.  The hidden space in a tub surround can be a good place to store toilet rolls and cleaning products.  The back of the bathroom door is an often overlooked place for storage potential.  Hooks can easily be installed for hanging towels, wash cloths, shoe holders, dressing gowns etc.  Small recessed niches alongside the shower are handy for keeping shampoos and shower gels, and they stop a wet footed dash across the bathroom to reach forgotten items.  Even shower curtains these days can come with inbuilt storage pockets.
