It’s freezing! Brrrrr

December 15, 2010 by Tricia

I can’t believe how cold it is here in Toronto this week.

Monday was the worst. It was -27 Celsius (16.6 f) with the windchill (-18 C -.4 F without it which is cold enough!). Our furnace was on most of the day. On and off, on and off it went. On top of that, our power kept going out all day too, which of course is very scary when it’s that cold out.

I remember waking up just after 7 am because the furnace made a weird sound and I realized that the power had just gone out. I think that was the first time it went out that day and luckily it was only out for about five minutes. It didn’t go out again until about 3 pm and at that time it went on and off quickly three or four times. Then it went off again around 6 pm, then 7 pm and then at about 10 pm it went on and off several times over a half our period. Then it did that again at about 11 pm and then 11:30 pm. I think our power went out about 30 times on Monday.

We did call the power company and heard a recording about the power outages in our area. I guess the problem was called Auto renewal and they must have had power crews working on it all day. I think it actually took until some time on Tuesday to fix it because I know the power went out at least twice on Tuesday morning.

Every time the power went out on Monday I got a little more stressed. I kept being afraid that the power would be out for hours. The house would be freezing cold in no time if that happened!

Anyway … since Monday it’s been a little warmer, but it’s still extremely cold. It was -18 Celsius (-.4 F) with the windchill on Tuesday and I think it was -16 Celsius (3.2 F) with the Windchill earlier today as well.

If this keeps up I’m going to go rooting in my closet and try to find our electric blanket and if I can’t find it … well I just might go out and buy one! Our master bedroom is the coldest room in the house so anything that can keep us a little warmer as we try to sleep in this cold would help!

Has it been extremely cold in your area too? We’ve had some snow, but compared to the cold it’s nothing to complain about.

Another shopping trip

December 15, 2010 by Tricia

I’m just waiting for my husband to get home from work and then we’re going out shopping.

I need to go to Costco tonight. I saw my family doctor yesterday for a regular appointment but while I was there I told her about how I’ve been so very very cold lately as well as extremely tired and she seems to think that I might have Seasonal Affective Disorder. I think it’s my thyroid acting up … especially since my symptoms totally fit hypothyroidism and only partially fit S.A.D. but the light might be worth getting to help fix my sleep cycle if nothing else.

Anyway .. while we’re out shopping I might take a look at the women’s apparel section of the store … or perhaps talk my husband into going to another nearby store if I can. I need new clothes – badly! Everything I own is loose on me, I desperately need new pants, new tops, new sweaters and so on.

Plus .. who doesn’t love a shopping spree? LOL

I think I need a new computer

December 15, 2010 by Tricia

I think sometime in the new year I might be looking for a new computer. Actually, I’ll be looking for new laptop to be specific. My laptop has been acting up lately.

My laptop is getting slow and while I’m working on it I can hear (and feel!) the DVD drive working … sometimes the dvd/cd holder pops open on it’s own without me hitting any buttons at all. I’ve checked the computer many times recently for viruses or malware and I can’t find anything wrong with it. It just seems to be acting up.

It is four years old after all!

I’m going to be in the Ottawa area in the new year and while I’m there I might visit a friend in Quebec … maybe I’ll do a little ordis (computer) shopping while I’m there. LOL No matter where I am, there’s almost always some amazing sales at the beginning of the year as stores sell off their old and or excess inventory.

My husband helps with the cleaning – sometimes

December 11, 2010 by Tricia

Does your husband help around the house? Mine does.

I know … I might be quite lucky.

Chris was home this past Monday and he really helped me out by doing a lot of vacuuming. He vacuumed the whole house, plus he vacuumed the duct work – well as far as he could reach into each air register.

All the vacuuming started when he noticed how much dust was on the fan blades of one of our ceiling fans so he pulled out the vacuum so he could get the dust off more easily and the rest of the cleaning just naturally followed.

The house is so much cleaner after all the work my husband did too .. especially now that the duct work is clean!

So … does your husband ever help out around the house? Does he clean?

If Canada has an oil well blowout it’s going to be very bad

December 10, 2010 by Tricia

This evening I’m taping a documentary on CBC about the Gulf Oil Spill. Apparently the documentary questions whether we here in Canada are about to have our own Offshore Accident off the coast of Newfoundland.

The Doc Zone documentary is called Blowout: Is Canada Next? and I’m sure we’re going to find it very interesting. I didn’t know this, but if there is an emergency on the Chevron (Canada’s deepest well off the coast of Newfoundland) it would take 11 days for ships to reach the spill. Now that’s scary isn’t it?

Here’s a quote from the Doc Zone page for the Blowout Documentary:

Just weeks after the Deepwater Horizon blowout in the Gulf, Chevron began drilling Canada’s deepest oil exploration well off the coast of Newfoundland. Located 430 kms from shore, the Chevron well is twice as deep as BP’s Deepwater Horizon well, six times further out to sea, and in much rougher seas. In the event of a blowout, it would take 11 days for emergency response ships to even reach the spill. An oil blowout off the coast of Newfoundland would decimate the world’s last remaining Atlantic cod fishery, along with several species of whales, seals, turtles, coral habitats and seabirds that feed in the basin. These rich and fertile seas are the backbone to Newfoundland’s tourism industry. An oil spill would create dead zones within the ocean and potentially devastate this economic mainstay that brings in over 1 billion tourist dollars annually.

The documentary is on CBC News world at 10 pm if anyone is interested in watching.
