Our friend got caught!

May 16, 2007 by Tricia

Wow. We just found out that one of our friends got a big fine for using a radar detector in his car.

They are not legal here in Canada. I think they’re legal in either all or some US States but as far as I know they aren’t legal here in Canada and I now know that you can get a really big fine if you’re caught using one!

I don’t feel all that sorry for our friend. He’s always speeding and a bit of a reckless driver at that. Hopefully now that he can’t use his radar detector he’ll slow down a bit and be more careful.

How do you feel about Radar detectors? Do you use one?

Small re-design of our enclosed back porch

May 16, 2007 by Tricia

I’ve been looking for new blinds for our enclosed back porch. It faces south and it’s just so bright. The room gets really hot with the sun pouring in too, so we must do something.

The room was built by the previous home owners. It has different sized, but large windows on the south facing wall, a window and glass paned door on the east side, windows on the west side – that wall adjoins with our neighbors enclosed back porch so those windows have a privacy film on them, and then the wall that leads to the house is brick.

The actually walls that the windows are in are paneled with a dark wood. I’d like to try my hand at lightly whitewashing those walls to brighten the room … yet put nice white mini-blinds on the windows to cut down the glare from the sun. I think the room would be very welcoming if I could pull it off.

What do you think?

Strange hangover cures

May 10, 2007 by Tricia

On Monday, as I came back from a doctors appointment we ran into our new and apparently temporary mailman. It turns out he’s an old acquaintance. He’s the ex-boyfriend of one of the guys that I work with in the ER.

We’ve had the two over to our house several times, but since I’ve been stuck at home sick I hadn’t seen either of them for quite a while. Talking to M about the get togethers we’d had in the past got me thinking about his ex’s strange drinking habits.

You see, B, as I’ll call him, used to enjoy drinking a concoction that was half beer and half Clamato juice! I can’t remember if I ever dared to even have a sip. Doesn’t that just sound awful!

Other than getting some extra vitamins from the Clamato juice the only benefit that I can think of to drink such a thing would be that it would make a great hang over preventer, or if you drank it the morning after a night of partying it could probably be considered one of those wild hangover cures because I’m sure all the salt in the Clamato juice must help prevent dehydration while drinking, and it’s the dehydration the morning after that usually makes you feel so awful.

I don’t tend to drink all that much these days, but if I ever do over do it, perhaps I’ll try B’s mix the day after and see if it helps.

What crazy hangover cures have you come across or tried?

Late spring bulbs blooming early

May 9, 2007 by Tricia

Yellow Daffodil

My garden is full of spring blooms! Since I started the garden in 2001, I think I’ve planted more than 3000 spring blooming bulbs.

I choose some that bloomed early – as in late March Crocus’, and others are early iris’ and tulips. Some like the Daffodil above, and other tulips are said to be late bloomers and often don’t bloom for me until Mid to Late May, but many of the late blooming bulbs that I planted already have buds or are already blooming.

Everything is early this year! I’m sure that’s because we had such a mild winter here in Toronto.

It’s starting to get quite warm here now too. The spring blooms won’t last much longer if it continues to be so warm so I’d better get out into that garden and enjoy the flowers.

My alarm clock is dying

May 7, 2007 by Tricia

For the last few months my alarm clock has been acting up. It’s really old. I think I’ve had it since I was perhaps 14 years old. I’m amazed that it’s lasted this long actually.

Unfortunately it’s on it’s last legs. The sound/ volume knob must be full of dust inside as sometimes when I turn it all I get is this weird static sound instead of the music that the radio alarm clock is set to. So consequently, when I set my alarm it sometimes blasts music to wake me up – as it should, and other times it’s just this light static that does nothing to wake me.

Unbelievably I’ve had a hard time finding a new alarm clock that I like. I can usually set up any type of electronic equipment without a problem, but for some reason this new radio alarm clock that I got defied me. I think it was a Timex – you could set the alarm in two different time zone modes, it automatically knew when Day light savings time took effect in this part of the world, it was supposed to have an FM/AM radio, and it had a one of those built in sound machines that played 6 different types of sounds of nature.

The demo one worked in the store, but the one we purchased did nothing but alarm with a bzzzzzzzzzzzzz every morning at 6:55 am. I couldn’t change the alarm time, and I couldn’t change it to radio or natural sound mode. So back it went.

Now I’m looking for yet another alarm clock. I just want something simple with big numbers that I can see from a distance, a radio alarm and easy buttons so when I’m half asleep and decide I don’t want to get up I can turn it off easily without having to get out the instruction manual.

Why am I having so much trouble finding a simple alarm clock?
