A road trip out East

June 27, 2007 by Tricia

A few years ago my husband and I went on a trip out east with my parents. My parents were both approaching their 80’s by this time and while they would have gone on their own they appreciated the chance to go on a road trip with Chris and I. Plus, having four drivers made it much easier to travel!

We drove from Ottawa Ontario into Quebec, stopping in Quebec City to see the sights. Then over the next day or so we drove eastward until we reached New Brunswick seeing sites as we went. We mostly stayed in motels as we traveled but a few times we rented cabins and when we reached Prince Edward Island we rented a vacation home for a night.

Staying in the vacation home was great. I think we’d been on the road for close to a week by that time and it was nice to be able to do our laundry! The rental home was located beside a small bay and it was just beautiful.

Chris and I wanted to stay there for a few days, but we were the ones who had a limited time for a holiday as we had to get back to work in a week so we moved on and drove to Nova Scotia. We drove around the whole perimeter of the island … it’s not so easy to find a motel on the west side of Nova Scotia .. at least not if you are driving along the perimeter!

I’d never been out East before. I’d been out west several times – most often driving from Ottawa or Toronto all the way out west through the Rockies and all. So this was my chance to say that I’d been to almost every Canadian province. We didn’t go to Newfoundland – it was just too far to go in our limited amount of time. The ferry ride alone takes 6 or 8 hours I think.

Leaving Nova Scotia we drove back through part of New Brunswick and into Maine. I’d always wanted to go to Maine because one of my favorite authors lives there and bases many of his novels in Maine. Can you guess who it is? Steven King of course!

While in Maine we stayed at a wonderful Maine bed and breakfast. It was only two miles from New Hampshire so we had diner in one State and slept in another. The next day we drove through New Hampshire, Vermont and into New York State and then back into Ontario at Cornwall.

I really enjoyed that trip. The people from out east are so friendly and helpful. The scenery was just lovely too.

Of all the places we stayed on our adventure the two places that stand out in my memory as places that I’d definitely stay in again were the vacation rental in PEI and the Bed and Breakfast in Maine. I wish I could remember the names of each place!

I may be biased but I think pretty much all of Canada is beautiful. If you ever do come to Canada for a visit I’m sure you’ll enjoy yourself. If you already live here, but haven’t seen all of this great country I suggest that you try to see some of our lovely country.

Take a road trip if you can, as you’ll see more that way and you’ll also get a better idea of just how huge Canada is!

A full head of hair is not guarantee

June 27, 2007 by Tricia

My husband and I have been together for 18 years now. It sounds like a long time, but it really doesn’t feel that long at all. Of course we haven’t been married that long. We’ve only been married for 13 years.

I was just thinking how when Chris and I first got together he had such a full head of hair I thought, great, this guys never going to go bald, he’s got so much hair!

It turns out that I wasn’t quite right about about my prediction. I wasn’t wrong, but I wasn’t right either. You see, his hair line is receding slightly. Just a little bit around the temples. Unfortunately that’s not all. In the past couple of years I’ve noticed that his hair has been getting thinner at the crown.

I blame it on his love of baseball caps. he used to always wear them and he’d tighten the band so much that it would always leave a big mark in his forehead when he’d take the hat off.

It’s not like I think he’ll end up bald or that he’ll need a Hair Transplant or anything, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he does end up with a small bald patch at the top of his head.

I guess there’s no guarantee.

Interesting name for a bra

June 27, 2007 by Tricia

Oh my gosh … I was just on a website looking at bras, ’cause you know, women can never have too many nice bras, and I found a page for something called open tip bras. Do you know what an open tip bra is? If you don’t go look, I’ll wait for you to come back.

Of course I’ve encountered that type of bra before … might even have purchased one … but I never knew that that was what they were called.

The name sure does make sense, but I don’t think I ever would have thought to call that type of bra an open tip if I were looking for one to purchase.

** If you didn’t go take a look you probably still have no idea what I’m talking about, take a guess in the comment section if you didn’t look. **

Don’t steal my pen

June 27, 2007 by Tricia

I’m strange. I’ll admit it.

I’m very particular about my writing pens. It’s not just the type of pen, it’s the fact that it’s my pen and I like to know where it is when I want to use it.

Ok let me explain … my husband is a pen stealer. This is probably why our small household of two goes through sometimes as many as two packages of pens a month. The packages I’m referring to usually have a dozen pens in them!

We both work in the hospital and that’s another area where you guard your pen with your life. The hospital doesn’t supply the staff with pens. They probably got wise years ago. So, as a result of there not being any pens at work, and often no one to borrow a pen from because everyone knows they’ll never get it back … we buy our own pens and take them with us.

Ok, so Chris brings a pen to work, I do too when I’m working. He could use the same pen each day until it runs out of ink like I do, but I guess he’s one of those people that either give their pen away out of kindness or misplaces it. So he’s always getting a new pen.

I have pens that I like to write with and they’re in the hands off zone on my desk. Well, if Chris can’t find a pen he always tries to steal one of my writing pens! ARghhh … Of course if he does manage to steal my pen without me knowing it that’s when I’ll discover that the latest package of pens that we bought is empty.

Sometimes it feels like a very strange obsession, but after writing this out I realize that almost everyone that works at the hospital must have a bit of a pen obsession since they are so hard to come by at work.

ER madness

June 27, 2007 by Tricia

Speaking of my nursing career … I work in the Emergency department of a community hospital. I’m awfully lucky since the hospital is only three blocks from my home. I can actually walk to work! How great is that?

Now, I’ve been off work for a while due to my illness but I think about my job a lot and I still keep in touch with the nurses in my department. They tell me about some of the strange cases they’ve seen come in or how crazy it got in the department during the last full moon. (yes its true – there is a full moon effect, ask any emergency service worker!)

One of the saddest cases that I remember is someone who was brought in by the police. It was a girl who’d been dieting using Ephedra but she was over-dieting .. basically not eating. She was just skin and bones. On top of that she also liked to dabble in drugs … well the combination of starving herself, using diet stimulants and the drugs that she’d taken caused a severe reaction.

She was in bad shape! I was actually surprised that the police didn’t call the EMS to bring her in when they found her. Anyway, I spent most of that night taking care of her and worrying over her. She pulled through but it’s just mind boggling what people do to themselves.

I don’t have an end story for her. Unfortunately that’s the way it is in the ER. We do what we can to help people and often they are still very ill when they leave the department to go to surgery or to a floor for further care. Unless we specifically follow up on the person – and who has time in the ER, especially if the patient is no longer your patient, you just never know if they got better or what happened.

Anyone else an ER nurse?
