Lovely White tulips

November 22, 2007 by Tricia

Wordless Wednesday

I wish tulips lasted longer in the garden or rebloomed in the fall instead of only blooming once in the Spring. They are so pretty.

I grow a number of different types of tulips but I think these ones are my second favorite type of all. My favorite of course is the fringed tulips!

Pet health insurance?

November 22, 2007 by Tricia

Now that we’re getting a puppy I’m happy that I’ll finally have a pet that I can get health insurance for … you see I’ve always had reptiles and I don’t think there’s any companies that offer health insurance for reptiles. I can see them not offering life insurance policies for any pets, but all animals should be able to have health insurance coverage shouldn’t they?

We’ve spent a lot of money at veterinarian offices over the years caring for our pets. Now that we’re getting a dog I think I might seriously look into those pet policies.

Do any of you have health insurance policies for your pets? Are they worth it or do you find that you spend more on them than you would with your normal vet visits?

We’re getting a puppy!

November 22, 2007 by Tricia

I was just telling my readers at Tricia’s Musings that we’re going to be putting a small dent in our checking account later this week when we buy a new puppy!

I’m so excited!

We’re going to drive out of town on Friday evening to go and see a couple who breed Labrador Retrievers. If all goes well we’ll be coming home with an exactly 11 week old puppy. The pups were born on September 7th, one day after my own birthday. If we do get one of the pups it won’t be hard for me to remember it’s birthday, we’ll celebrate together.

At this time the breeder has five pups. I think three are black and two are yellow. I haven’t decided if I have a preference of the dogs sex or color yet. My husband doesn’t have a preference right now either. We’ve decided that we’ll go and see the pups, hopefully we’ll still have a choice between the five as I don’t know if there are any other people heading out to that farm this week to pick up a pup, and we’ll see which one responds to use best and which one we like best. Hopefully we’ll both want the same one!

Yesterday evening, while we were still deciding if we’d drive out to where the pups are, we went to the Toronto Humane Society to look at the dogs waiting to be adopted. As I said in my post on Tricia’s Musings we’d originally thought about rescuing a dog in need of a new home, but the majority of dogs in rescues are older and I truly wanted the puppy experience. Still, we looked at all the dogs at the Humane society and I was right – most are between 7 and 12 years of age and many have behavioral problems as well as health problems. I’m not opposed to caring for an animal with problems, I’ve done it for years with reptiles, but with my own current health problems I think it would be best to have a healthy yet energetic new pet.

There was one 11 month old German Shepherd mix at the Humane Society that I did stop to consider adopting. He was so cute!

The Lab pup rules though. I sure hope we are happy with the conditions at the farm where they are currently living. The couple who has the pups breeds their dogs as a hobby and their dogs are registered with the Canadian Kennel Club and their pups will be too.

If you have a Labrador Retriever I’d love to hear your experiences, especially the puppy stage ones!

I vow to enjoy the perks of Vegas next time I go

November 21, 2007 by Tricia

Now that I’m starting to feel a little bit better (remember I got sicker on my trip to Vegas?) I’m feeling a little down that I wasn’t able to take advantage of being in Vegas.

Our hotel room overlooked the lovely pool area and while I don’t think we ever saw anyone swimming the weather was nice enough each day that we saw plenty of people soaking up the sun on the very comfortable looking lounge chairs.

Our hotel had a spa, hot tubs, all kinds of services and shops that we never used or visited … it’s really kind of sad when I think that the only service we really used was room service!

The next time we go to Vegas I think we’ll stay in a nicer hotel – ours had lots of amenities but wasn’t that nice over all and as I said the internet network sucked. So we’ll staying in a luxury hotel and take advantage of some of the perks. Hopefully we’ll also stop in a Casino and try some games or machines too rather than just walking through the casino. We did however manage to get ourselves escorted out of a casino though!

Such a gorgeous hibiscus

I brought our small hibiscus indoors about two weeks ago since it’s starting to get cold here. Actually tonights the first night that I’ve noticed it reach below zero! Brrr!

My hibiscus is happily upstairs in a sunny bedroom with all the other tropical plants and vines.

Each winter I cross my fingers that all these plants survive. Just being indoors doesn’t mean they’ll make it. They have to get used to being indoors in a drier environment again and then there’s pests like spider mites and white fly to contend with.

Well, whether my hibiscus survives or not it sure does produce beautiful flowers doesn’t it?
