6 Good Habits Worth Developing

September 30, 2012 by Trish

“Watch your habits, for they become character.” It is important to watch our habits. It is also important to develop good habits. Developing good habits can give us better health, more time, and more fulfillment in our lives.

Here are 6 habits that can make a huge impact in your life:

1. Exercise

It is suggested that we get at least 30 minutes of exercise a day. Daily exercise is such a great habit to develop. It can help you relieve stress, give you time to think and brainstorm, give you more energy, etc. It also releases much needed endorphins into your body that can help you feel good all day long.

30 minutes a day is ideal, but start with whatever you have time for. Even taking the stairs instead of the elevator is a good start! On top of that, eat healthy and drink 8 glasses of water a day. Between these 3 things you should find yourself more energetic, healthier, and less stressed.

2. Get Up Early

It is important to get your sleep. So whenever you can fit that in is great. But it is even more beneficial to go to bed early and get up early. It has been said that an hour of sleep before midnight is worth two after midnight. So, the earlier you can get to bed the more impactful your sleeping time will be. On top of that, getting up early is a great habit. It’s good to get your day started early. The early bird catches the worm!

3. Set Goals

Setting goals is a great habit to develop. Goals help you have something to always be working towards. They help to give you more purpose in your day-to-day activities. They help give you the “why’s” behind what you’re doing. It is always good to have something to work towards. Set daily goals for yourself. What do you want to accomplish today? On top of that, set weekly, monthly, yearly, 5-year, and even lifetime goals. Check your goals often and track your progress. Reevaluate when needed.

4. Save Money

We could all use more money, right? Well instead of always waiting for that next big raise or job opportunity, take it into your own hands. It is recommended by many financial experts to save at least 10% of your income (and some experts recommend saving even more). Set up a budget, and make sure that budget includes at least 10% of your income going to savings. Then stick to your budget and savings plan. Put that money in a separate savings account and don’t touch it unless it’s an emergency or the goal you set the account up for. Whether you use those savings for retirement, a rainy day, or even a car or vacation, you will learn better self control, and experience more financial freedom if you can get in the habit of saving.

5. Say Thank You

Saying thank you is another wonderful habit to develop. Recognizing what others are doing for you, and looking for opportunities to express thanks, will help you develop a positive outlook. It will help you feel happier. And, as you say thank you to others, your newfound happiness and positivity will rub off on them. It will help everyone around you to have a happier attitude, and it will strengthen the relationships that you have with others.

6. Read

Growing in wisdom is something that we should all be doing as we move along in our lives. And reading is one of the best ways to do that. Reading can help us learn new things, develop creativity, expand our vocabulary, and create new skills for ourselves. But it doesn’t just have to just be education-centered books. Novels, biographies, even cookbooks or design books can help to expand our minds and our creativity. Whether it be daily, weekly, or even monthly, get in the habit of reading often.

How to Detect a Water Leak

September 29, 2012 by Trish

How to Detect a Water Leak

It is possible that any leak around your home can end up costing you loads of money, so it is best to catch it early and get it fixed as soon as possible. If you suspect you have a leak, then you should call a Water Leak Detection service because they will be able to detect and locate the leak for you with the use of their equipment, for example, infrared imaging. Listed below are a few ways to detect an underground leak for yourself; although, if you are still not sure whether you have a leak, then it is best to get some professional advice before a potential leak gets worse.

Increased water usage

If you have noticed an unusual increase in your water usage, then it is possible that you have a leak. If you suspect you have a leak, then you can record your water usage on a daily basis and keep track of you bills; this may give you a clearer idea on your situation and whether you think it is necessary to call a Water Leak Detection service. This service will help identify where the leak is coming from because it could be inside or outside you house.

Unusually damp areas

Another way to detect a leak is to check for unusually wet areas outside. As well as damp, these areas can also be moldy, mossy and surrounded by dry areas. The wet areas could be a sign of an underground leak and this should be checked by a professional to prevent any potential damage occurring.

Sinkholes

Sinkholes are also a potential sign of an underground leak. Sinkholes are a dip in the land that have been formed by eroded underground rock or a frequent exposure to water. They will also suggest that your leak is outside and not inside. If you have a sinkhole, then it does not mean you definitely have an underground link; it could have been caused by a number or things, for example, it can be caused by heavy rainfall. However, if you are uncertain on how the sinkhole has formed, then it would be worth contacting a Water Leak Detection service.

Unclean water

Rusty or dirty water can be another sign of an underground leak. However, like the previous points, this may not be the result of an underground leak and it could be related to a completely different issue, for example, rusty pipes. Although, it is still worth getting it checked out whether you believe it is an underground leak or not.

It is best to contact a Water Leak Detection Service for professional help if you suspect a leak. Also, the longer you wait to do something about the leak, the more money it may cost you and the more damage it can create. If there are any signs of unusual water usage, damp areas, sinkholes or unclean water, then it is possible that you have an underground leak and it should be examined by a Water Leak Detection service.

How to Increase Bathroom Storage Space

September 29, 2012 by Trish

With sales of grooming products soaring (especially mens) fitting all your age defining skin serums, exfoliating lotions and bronzing creams into your bathroom can be challenging.  Add to that piles of towels, bathroom cleaning products, laundry and jumbo packs of toilet roll; and your bathroom will feel less like a spa sanctuary and more like a clutter haven.   Luckily there are lots of ways to wash away your storage woes in even the smallest of bathrooms….

1)      Built in cabinets

Built in bathroom cupboards put your square footage to good use because they can be built to the exact specification of your bathroom, making the most of oddly shaped spaces.   The size, shape, length, width and thickness can all be altered to fit.  A recessed built in cabinet is the best choice for conserving precious floor space and any unused drywall space is an opportunity for this storage perk.  Free standing bathroom cabinets are another option, and if you’re on a tight budget these are significantly cheaper.  Medicine cabinets are often wall mounted alongside the mirror, but above the toilet is a good spot for maximising a small space.  Whatever style of cabinet you go for today’s cabinets are masters of organisation, with more and more amenities like built in drawer dividers, cosmetic trays, appliance garages (that hide but keep hand things you use everyday like hair dryers and electronic toothbrushes) and even wardrobe-like spaces for hanging clothes and laying out ties.

2)      Vanity Cabinet

A vanity cabinet is a great storage solution because it combines a wash basin and countertop with closed shelving below.   It also gives a bathroom a more stylish look because it hides the sink plumbing.  When choosing a vanity cupboard go for one with ample shelves and drawers so you can store lots of lotions and potions.  This is especially the case if you have teenage girls.

3)      Towel rails

Towel rails or ladders are the best way to keep towels off the floor.  There are lots of stylish designs these days so if you want your rail to be a feature point then be bold and go for an unusual curved or spiral design.  If stepping out of the bath into a warm and toasty fluffy towel sounds like your idea of heaven then go for a heated rail.

4)      No space left behind

If you want a minimalist look why not build some storage into the bath itself.  The hidden space in a tub surround can be a good place to store toilet rolls and cleaning products.  The back of the bathroom door is an often overlooked place for storage potential.  Hooks can easily be installed for hanging towels, wash cloths, shoe holders, dressing gowns etc.  Small recessed niches alongside the shower are handy for keeping shampoos and shower gels, and they stop a wet footed dash across the bathroom to reach forgotten items.  Even shower curtains these days can come with inbuilt storage pockets.

10 Easy Ways To Become More Energy Efficient

September 22, 2012 by Trish

If you’ve somehow managed not to notice the amazing worldwide downturn in the past 4 or 5 years, then it’s probably best you keep on doing what you were. However, if you haven’t been living in a cave without a TV or radio, you’ll know that times are tough for many. Economies have been faltering, and growth in many countries has all but stopped, so now is the time to make your household more efficient and asve some money. Here are some easy tips to help you out:

1 – Install an Energy Monitor
As the world slowly becomes more aware of the need for energy saving, energy monitors are getting cheaper and cheaper. Some companies now give them away at reduced rates or even as freebees, so see if you can get one on the cheap. They are quite easy to install usually, and allows you to easily monitor your home usage.

2 – Reuse Your Water
Showering or using the bath takes a lot of water, and a lot of energy to heat all that water. If you leave the water in the bath when you’ve finished it will stay warm for most of the night, helping to heat the house. Once it’s cooled you can use it to water the garden, or invest in a grey water recycling systems, and use it to flush your toilet.

3 – Be Frugal
As boring as it sounds, being frugal is the best way to save money and become more energy efficient. Put on another jumper, turn the heat down, turn lights and appliances off and bask in the savings you’re getting

4 – Heating Controls
Heating controls work most efficiently when they can be controlled in individual rooms. This can be simply turning radiators off in rooms that you don’t use, or more complicated heating systems that will allow you to program a schedule. Make sure also that you’re not using the timer to keep the heating on for longer than you need.

5 – Turn Things Off
It seems silly, but not enough people do it. Manufacturers have built standby systems into many different electrical items because of our innate laziness, but they use a lot of power over time. Simply getting up and switching things off can save you a whole load of power over the course of a year.

6 – Check The Levels
Read through the manufacturer’s instructions and make sure you’re not using electrical items such as fridges and freezers, heaters, boilers and thermostats on a higher setting that you need. Many people unwittingly run appliances at higher levels than needed, constantly costing them money.

7 – Insulate
If your home is well insulated, more heat will stay in, therefore meaning you need to spend less on heating. It’s simple but it works. Try and target roofs and walls first (especially if you live in older houses), as they tend to be the places that lose the most.

8 – Rechargeable Batteries
As a country, we discard over 600 million batteries per year. They’re costly to purchase in the first place and tricky to recycle. Why not replace all the batteries in the house with rechargeable ones, the electricity costs from recharging them will be far less than the cost of new ones.

9 – Energy Efficient Lighting
Compact fluorescent lighting has become more and more popular in the past 5 years, especially since government directives to phase out filament bulbs has begun. The technology has improved vastly, and now there is little noticeable difference between them and the old style products.

10 – Draught Proofing
Along the same lines as insulation, there are often many places in a house where air can escape. This acts as a heat drain, and hinders the good work you’ve been doing in the rest of the house. Make sure that doors and windows don’t have gaps, and if you can afford to fit new ones look into draught excluders and secondary removable glazing panels.

Insect Repellant Smart Options

September 18, 2012 by Trish

Bugs. No matter what purpose they serve, they can be a giant nuisance. Flies and mosquitoes can ruin a nice outdoor picnic, and certain insects, like bees, can be dangerous to those who may have an allergy.

Most people want to kill bugs found around their homes. They want to keep mosquitoes and flies away from their outdoor patio, and they want to keep other bugs, like ants and spiders, out of their homes.

For years, many people have been turning to pesticides or insecticides and other insect removal sprays in order to kill bugs and keep them away from certain areas, but most pesticides or insecticides contain poisons and can be very dangerous to your health.

Instead of putting your health and the health of your family at risk in order to keep pesky bugs at bay, consider using the following smart options.

Outdoor Insect Killer

Mostly known as “bug zappers”, these outdoor insect killers are a great way to keep bugs away from your home and patio without the need for poisonous sprays. Instead, these zappers use a fluorescent light to attract bugs, and when the bug is close enough, the light kills them. There are many different outdoor insect killers on the market, each varying in size and design, so make sure to choose the one that’s the best fit for your yard.

Citronella Candles

Citronella candles come in many different shapes and sizes and are a great way to keep bugs away from your patio. They look like regular candles, so they can fulfill their duty while still providing a nice ambiance. Citronella candles generate a scent that repels bugs, and while you can smell it, the scent is not overpowering.

Mosquito Dunks

Nobody like mosquitoes, and they can turn a nice outdoor experience into an itchy nightmare. Mosquitoes like water, and if you have a pond, bird bath or other standing water near your home, you’re going to have mosquitoes. You can fight them by placing mosquito dunks into these water sources. These rings are about two inches in diameter and can kill mosquito larvae up to 100 feet away.

Off! Clip On

A few years ago, Off! created a clip on bug repellent. This device has a repellent inside and uses a fan to propel the repellent out around your area. It works the same way as bug spray, but without the nasty pesticides and insecticides and definitely without the nasty bug spray smell.

Exterminators

If you have a major bug infestation near your home, hiring an exterminator to alleviate the problem can also be a smart option. Exterminators are knowledgeable about bugs, and along with taking care of your infestation, they’ll also find the root of the problem to better alleviate it. Plus, exterminators have different methods that can help you remove your bug problem in a safe way.

Don’t let a bug infestation kill your outdoor or indoor activities. Instead, use one of these smart options to help you safely remove bugs from your home.
