Taking advantage of this great weather

May 20, 2010 by Tricia

Last week it was cold, rainy and dreary here in Toronto, but this week it’s like summer has already arrived. It’s 27 C (80 F) right now and with humidity it feels more like 30 C (86 F)! That’s much warmer that it usually is in May.

Oh and I can’t really complain about the cool rainy weather last week. We’ve had great weather here in Toronto all year – no snow in February or March and spring like temps since early march – so how can I complain about a few bad days here and there? Besides – my beautiful garden needed the rain.

Since I knew the weather was going to be good this week and it looks good for next week too … last night my husband and I went to a new garden center shortly after Chris came home from work. I’d visited their website and found out that on Wednesdays they don’t charge tax! That means that along with taking advantage of some spring sales on plants we also got 13% off to total price.

We bought over $100 worth of annuals and veggies. Now I just have to plant them.

I was going to go out into the garden earlier today and start working on some of my planters, but it was so hot when I went out I decided to hold off for a while. Perhaps I’ll do a few planters this evening. Hey .. it’s light out until about 9 pm so I’ll have a few hours to work and it should be cooler … or well, at least the sun won’t be shining quite so brightly on my back as I work!

Since the weathers been so nice all Spring I thought we’d have the patio set up before now … but we haven’t hauled our glass and metal patio table and chairs out of the basement and storage area yet so I think we’ll probably do that this weekend. We’ll also get out our solar lights. I like to place them in the garden beds so that we have a little bit of ambient light at night.

Sometime this weekend I want to shop for some cushions for our patio chairs. They’re nice chairs, but a small cushion to lean on might be nice. I find my back hurts a bit if I sit in our patio chairs for too long. I might also look at outdoor rugs to place on the patio under the patio table.

Do you have plans for the long weekend? It’s Victoria Day here in Canada and I believe in the Us it’s Memorial day so I’m sure a lot of people are going up to the cottage, camping or getting together with family. We don’t have any family or travel plans … just the gardening plans. Our weekends have been pretty busy over the last few weeks so it might be nice to just stick around home and get some things done that we’ve been putting off – ie like putting together the patio table and chairs etc.

Getting in shape for summer

May 15, 2010 by Tricia

Darn … I think I might have gained a few pounds in the last week or so.

I was doing so good too! I’m trying to lose weight before summer … I don’t have too much to lose, but being a few pounds lighter would be nice. Being more toned would be good too.

A couple of months ago I went through a period of quick weight loss maybe because my Crohn’s was acting up – I’m not sure, but either way I dropped several pounds really fast. I guess that’s stopped.

Hmm maybe I’m plateauing? Na you don’t gain weight when you’re plateauing.

Oh well, I guess I’ll have to work harder at getting in shape this week.

Zap your Zits?

May 15, 2010 by Tricia

When I was out shopping earlier today I spent some time browsing in the cosmetic section. I was trying to find Bag Balm .. a specific brand, because my heels are so dry and I know the Bag Balm will fix them up in no time. Gotta get ready for summer.

While I was in the cosmetics and beauty supple department of the store I came across this odd new treatment for acne … it’s a blue acne light thing. I guess you just kind of zap your zits with this blue light and they heal up fast.

I don’t really suffer from acne so I wasn’t interested in buying, but I found it interesting. Have you ever tried one of these things? Do they work?

Shopping Addiction?

May 15, 2010 by Tricia

I think one of my friends is addicted to buying things online. Ok maybe not just online, but she buys a ton of stuff online. I think she not only enjoys spending money but also likes getting packages delivered to her home almost daily!

It’s kind of funny and sad at the same time. I was over at her place recently and she was doing a search trying to find a way to buy diet pills online while we talked. She’d told me that earlier that day she was buying gifts for her family. The gifts however end up in one room of her house – stored and it seems never given away. I guess she’s a hoarder too.

I’ve been trying to get her out of the house so maybe she’ll spend a bit less time online but it’s not easy convincing her.

Have you ever had a friend or family member that had a problem with shopping or spending money? What did you do to help them?

It’s harder to find a nice style of eye glass frames than I thought

May 15, 2010 by Tricia

Wow, I never realized how hard it was to find a decent pair of glasses! I’ve always worn a combination of eye glasses and contacts … but two years ago I suddenly couldn’t wear my contacts anymore because as soon as I put a contact on my eye my eye would start to burn, tear and swell. I think it was some kind of allergic reaction.

So I’ve only been wearing glasses for the last two years … but I think my eye sight has changed again so I decided that it’s time to get my eyes tested and then get one or two new pairs of glasses.

I have an appointment with an optometrist next week but in the mean time I thought it might be good to go out and see if I can find some eye glass frames that I like.

That was harder than I thought!

I thought maybe Walmart or Costco might be cheaper so my husband and I went to both of those stores earlier today to look at the selection and I couldn’t find any frames that suited my face.

What’s with all the really narrow rectangular or oblong lenses? I don’t like big glasses or lenses, but almost all the styles I saw today were way too small .. and I have a small faces. Who wants lenses sticking out from the side of your face.

I think my hunt for a new pair of glasses at a reasonable price is going to take a while. Anyone know of any good places in the Toronto area that has a wide selection of frames and sells eye glasses at a reasonable price?

Anyway … while I was looking for a style of glass frame that suited my face my husband wandered around the stores that we were in … in the last store I had to go searching for him .. he was looking at an epson receipt printer of all things … never even knew those existed! LOL Oh well, it kept him busy for a while.
