It was really nice here in Toronto today. So nice that when my husband and I were planning on going outside to do some work on our front yard we decided to let our dog sit in the enclosed front porch to watch us work.
We had a scare though.
When my husband opened the screen door our dog ran out of the house! This has only happened once before and luckily, just as she did the one time it happened before she ran onto the sidewalk and then into our driveway towards the backyard.
Sigh of relief!
If she’d run out into the street I think I’d be doing some doggy funeral planning right now. We live on a very busy street and I’d hate to think of what might have happened if she’d run in front of a car.
Our Lab, Midnight is usually pretty good about listening to us. I tell her to sit and stay when I’m opening the outer screen door and she does. I do however usually keep my hand close to her collar so that I can grab her if she decides not to stay put, but she always does. I think what happened today was that my husband forgot to tell her to say and since he’s the one that walks her most often I think she just thought she was going out with him.
Anyway, I’m relieved that my dog is safe.
Have you had any close calls with your dog getting out of the house?

No, but our cat got run over last year :-(… We just got a new one, and now we’re afraid to let her outside. You just never know when they are going to run into the street!

No, when I lived at home and we had a dog; she was always outside. So, no issues with running out. Actually when I was a kid no one kept their animals indoors like they do now. If people didn’t have a safe yard, weren’t home in the day; they simply didn’t have a dog. Everyone had a dog house, or a dog run so they could run around the yard. What’s changed? Interesting thought. Now days everyone has pets, keeps them indoors because they’re at work etc.
Glad your dog is safe. I sometimes think people put their needs and wants (wanting a dog) before whats best for the dog now. It’s like a fad around here. Everyone has a dog; everyone works, so the poor things are shut in all day long where they can’t run and get exercise. Then to keep them company everyone gets a 2nd and 3rd dog. Then when folks get home from work the poor dogs go nuts outside. I really mean go nuts. The barking is awful here, due to the large number of dogs. There are 14 dogs I can count quickly just off the top of my head and that only covers 7 neighbors.
Can you let your dog out a back door instead of opening the front door? In the counting of the 14 dogs above, only 1 doesn’t bark like it’s going crazy and thats a Lab! They’re such good dogs, easily trainable, and my favorite of the group. In fact, sometimes that dog get’s tired of hearing the yipping and carrying on so it will bark a couple of good deep barks….that I swear he’s telling them to shut up! And…it works too. lol
