Too many weight loss commercials lately

October 29, 2008 by Tricia

It seems that pretty much everything I look at these days has some kind of article or advertisement for weight loss products. I don’t know how many times a day I see Marie Osmond’s advertisement for Nutrisystem! Depending how long I’ve got the TV on each day I guess I see that commercial between five and maybe 15 times a day!

Maybe the commercials and ads are just standing out a little more as I’ve been thinking about the few extra pounds I’ve gained lately. it’s not easy having a chronic disease (Crohn’s). You become less active when you aren’t feeling well or in pain and the next thing you know you’ve gained some weight. It sucks.

One of the weight loss supplements I’ve been hearing about lately is alli diet pills. They apparently help reduce the amount of fat that your body absorbs. Back in the early 90’s I used to work in a pain clinic and one of the patients was taking a diet pill that sounded very similar to Alli, maybe it was Alli or a predecessor to the drug. Anyway … I don’t think she reduced her fat intake because the pills ended up causing problems for her. I guess they gave her the runs! I don’t know if Alli can do that to you or not .. hopefully they’ve overcome that problem.

Have you noticed an increase in weight loss ads or commercials? Maybe the companies that specialize in weight loss diets and supplements are stepping up their game since the holiday season is near. Everyone wants to look good for the holidays, don’t they?

Getting free stuff is cool

October 27, 2008 by Tricia

I seem to be on a roll lately. Over the last two weeks it seems that at least every second day there’s been a delivery of promotional products from a variety of companies. It’s kind of neat getting stuff to try out.

My husband and I both have several blogs. I think the total between us is at about 18 right now. So I guess it’s no surprise that Marketing companies are contacting us via some of the more popular blogs that we write and offering us products to try and possibly write about on our sites.

In the past two weeks we’ve received two cans of coffee, a promo for eggs, granola type bars, really cool earphones to use with an MP3 player or smart phone, two DVDS for a TV show about UFOs and the unexplained, a razor and a pair of jeans.

It’s not always this way of course. Sometimes we go quite a few months without being offered anything neat to try, but we seem to be on a run right now.

Do you have marketing companies contact you through your blog offering you free promotional items?

Mmmm I love Dahlias

I’ve always loved Dahlias. They are beautiful flowers and they come in many different sizes and styles. Over the years I’ve grown everything from Dinner Plate Dahlias to Cactus Dahlias like the one pictured above. I think I like the cactus dahlias best.

I actually hadn’t grown Dahlias for about two years until this past summer. I’d forgotten to buy bulbs and the few that I’d left in the ground had finally died out. (They do occasionally overwinter in the ground here in Toronto, but not always). That reminds me, I’d better go outside later today and dig up my Dahlia bulbs or else I’ll have to remember to buy more next year! Might as well save some money and try to keep the bulbs in the basement, right?

Do you grow Dahlias? What kind?

Bombarded by Holiday music and it’s only October!

October 25, 2008 by Tricia

Chris and I went out to a mall today to do some shopping. We were just getting some stuff for around the house and some pet supplies.

I was surprised to see that not only do most stores have decorations up for Halloween (expected given that it’s only a few days away) but also that they are starting to decorate for Christmas as well! I guess it’s started to become normal for most stores to start promoting Christmas sales even as early as September, but I think it’s too early.

Back in the day when I used to work across from one of the biggest malls in Toronto, I’d go shopping or walk through the mall several times a week and I’d say that by early November I was burned out on Christmas and Christmas music. I’m sure others feel the same way if they go to department stores or malls on a regular basis at this time of year.

One sure sign that the Holidays are fast approaching is the sight of personal and corporate holiday cards in the mail. Some of my blogs are becoming quite well known and as a result I get all these invites to blogging, promotional and even corporate events that are happening nearby. Why .. I don’t know. I’m not even sure how some of these companies get my address, but it is kind of nice to be invited to exclusive events like the LG Shine campaign a few months ago!

Are you starting to be bombarded by holiday decorations and music every time you walk into a store too? And … do you get invites to promotional events via your blogging either by email or by snail mail?

My favorite magazines seem to be just filled with ads

October 23, 2008 by Tricia

Doesn’t it seem like there’s more ads in magazines than there used to be?

There’s a few magazines that I subscribed to each month and I’d swear that in the past there used to be more articles than advertising, but lately it seems the opposite is true. I gave up on some magazines like Vogue and others like it in the past because the first 40 or 50 pages were all ads, now I think I might dump some of the mags I’m subscribed to for that reason.

Ads that are related to the magazines topic are ok to some degree, but I find that there’s ads for just about everything in some of the magazines lately. One that I was just reading had ads for perfumes mixed with ads for the best fat burners, stool softeners and health insurance all mixed together between fashion layouts and articles about the latest cosmetics.

Maybe I should just start reading the internet version of my favorite magazines. I’ll still see ads, but it’s not quite the same.
