Basement renovation ideas?

January 29, 2008 by Tricia

I was watching one of those home shows on TV over the weekend, one of those ones where they totally renovate or redecorate one or two rooms of a house … Well, on the show I watched the renovated the living room so that it would be a home theater with theater seating, big screen TV, surround sound system and special lighting so that when you’re watching a film or something on the big screen the lighting is really low.

I’ve mentioned before that we hope to redo our basement. Well, no redo it, but finish the basement since it’s currently a raw unfinished space. We hope to make part of our basement a home theater room. Of course the rest of the plans include a really nice bathroom, perhaps hiding the laundry area and maybe a small spare bedroom.

I wonder if we can make a spare bedroom without closing off the space with walls? Perhaps just a half wall separating the bedroom area from the home theater room? Our basement is fairly small so I think the more open we keep the space the larger it will look. Yeah, I know, we can’t make it look bigger than it is, but if we start putting walls up all over the place it will look really small.

Any ideas for a basement renovation?

Frosted Monkshood

frosted Monkshood in winter

This past fall I didn’t clear out all the dead plants and now that winter is here in full force it’s interesting to take a look at the various plants when they have snow and or ice on them.

The above photo is of one of my Monkshood plants. This is a very poisonous plant who’s flowers bloom in autumn. It’s very pretty when it’s stalks are covered in rows of hooded flowers.

I fear that I’ll probably have to get rid of my Monkshood this year though. We have a puppy and I plan on trying to keep her out of the garden beds, but we all know accidents can happen and given how curious young dogs can be it’s probably safer if I remove any truly toxic plants from my garden … as much as I hate to lose a nice plant.

Anyone want some Monkshood?

Tired of hearing about celebrity problems

January 27, 2008 by Tricia

I haven’t been writing in my celebrity blog very much lately. Why? Well for a while there it seemed that just about every star was battling some kind of drug or alcohol addiction or was checking into drug rehab. I simply got sick of writing about it!

Now that a whole crop of new stars are pregnant and or have just given birth perhaps it’s a sign that things are changing on the celeb scene a bit? Maybe I’ll start writing in my blog Celebrity Scoop a little bit more. Actually I hope to start writing about more of the fashion trend and hot items that the stars are buying. Purses, shoes, the latest clothing and try to find comparable products that we, the common people, can afford. Wish me luck?

Man I take a lot of photos!

January 27, 2008 by Tricia

I can’t believe how many photos I can take at one time with my camera! It’s amazing.

I often take my camera with me when we go downtown, to the beach, when I walk around my backyard looking at my garden and I often pull it out these days when my puppy is doing something terribly cute. Hey what can I say, I like to capture the various stages of my garden throughout the year and well my puppy is only going to be a puppy for a while longer now.

I think I need to get a larger memory card for my camera though. I’ve got a 1 gb memory card but I’m thinking of getting one of those 2 gb micro sd cards. Actually they are a good price right now so maybe I’ll even get two of them!

As I said when I’ve got my camera in my hands I just keep clicking. It’s not unusual for me to be out in my garden with my camera for 15 or 20 minutes and to come back inside to discover that I’ve taken 250 photos! No wonder it takes me a while to get them from my camera to my flickr account … I’ve got to resize and then upload all those photos each time!

Do you take a lot of photos with your digital camera? How big is your memory card?

Our old house

This weeks theme is Old Fashioned

skylight

This weeks photo theme is old fashioned and well … my house is of an old fashioned North American style since it was build in 1927.

When we first moved into the neighborhood we met a man who lived across the street at the corner house. He remembered the houses being build and in fact had lived in his house as a child! He moved away as a young adult but bought the house when it was available later in life. So he lived most of his life in that home!

We got a lot of stories about the old neighborhood and what the area used to be prior to housing going up. Basically it was farm land. I guess back then, this was the outskirts of the city, but these days it’s almost downtown!

The photo above was taken a couple of years ago when my husband and I, with the help of some friends, were putting a skylight in the roof of our enclosed porch. That’s why there’s a big hole in the roof … we were only half done the job at that point!

Our house is triple brick and the walls are plaster and lathe – with no insulation! Luckily the house was very well build and it seems warm enough even on very cold winter days.

BTW see our narrow driveway? Our car barely fits in it and it’s a compact car! Believe it or not that’s a shared driveway. We only own half of it! Luckily our older neighbor (Sofie my stalker) doesn’t have a car and doesn’t mind us hogging the driveway all the time. Otherwise we’d have to make a deal with the neighbors to use the driveway half the time or something. No wonder I sometimes think about getting a Smart Car … it would probably fit our half of the driveway easily!
