Gruss en Achen is a lovely little rose

Grus en Achen Rose

I think I’m obsessed with Roses this weekend. Well who wouldn’t be if their whole garden was flush with rose blooms? I figured I might as well feature some of my lovely roses in my GTS posts this week.

This lovely rose is Gruss en Achen. I think it’s one of my most neglected roses. Oh they all get good care, but this rose is in the shadow of my slowly growing Japanese Maple. Once the maple fills in with it’s fine red leaves this poor rose gets far too little light. I’m sure it would be taller if it were in a sunnier spot. I must remember to move it next spring!

It’s a lovely rose and it’s a shame that it’s hidden pretty much beneath my short maple. Look at that full bloom. It’s an antique style rose with a light fragrance. Hardy little rose too … well worth trying in your garden if you enjoy roses.

Oh and if you enjoy roses you’ve got to take a look at the Star of my garden this week. My Climbing Westerland has given me it’s first ever blooms and they are to die for – go see for yourself!

A sign that speaks the truth!

July 3, 2008 by Tricia

Wordless Wednesday

Seriously. Have you ever seen a more truthful sign?

There are thousands and thousands of seagulls here in Toronto – especially in the beach area and if you happen to have food they flock around you. Dare to feed them and well just read the sign to know what happens. Same for Canadian Geese – I’ve heard that they poop on average every two minutes or something to that effect. That’s a lot of Sh**!

Warnings on instructions most ridiculous I’ve seen

June 29, 2008 by Tricia

Chris and I finally got around to putting in our new window air conditioner on Saturday. Ok, well Chris put it in all I did was read the directions after he installed it. LOL

I took a look at the instruction booklet because I wanted to find out what the Dry setting was on the air conditioner. I’ve never had an air conditioner with a dry mode on it and you know what? The instructions never explained what it was so I’m still clueless.

What I did find in the booklet was the craziest set of warnings that I’ve ever seen! Geez, it made me feel like we should have each called for a life insurance quote and perhaps made sure our wills were in order.

Lets see there was a warning about the batteries for the remote. Specifically –

If you eat the liquid from the batteries, brush your teeth and see doctor.

Huh … who eats battery liquids and how much liquid is in a small AA battery anyway?

Here’s another one – Do not drink water drained from Air conditioner.

The list goes on. I’ve seen some odd and often humorous warnings on electrical appliance instructions before, but almost every warning in this air conditioner booklet is strange. Do they really think people are that stupid? Honestly?

Everything that can flower is flowering

I love this time of year.

Summer is here and it’s warm and sunny outside – well most of the time, it’s been story here the last week or so, and of course the flowers are pretty much all in bloom. Just about perfect if you ask me.

It’s at this time of year that I really try to enjoy my garden. I still have a bit of work to do in the garden (add mulch to back flower beds), but for the most part the hard work is done. Now it’s the plants turn to pay me back for all the care of given them, and oh how they are paying it back this year!

Look at these lovely Heuchera flowers …

Isn’t that a gorgeous color?

On my two other Green Thumb Sunday blogs (Tricia’s Musings and As the Garden Grows) I showed my visitors rose and peony blooms, but there are so many other lovely flowers that are blooming in my garden right now.

Take the Lavender for example – it’s at it’s prime and it’s lovely.

Then there are my many clematis plants, most of which have blooms right now. This one is Arctic … something:

Last but definitely not least is the Malva. It produces such pretty flowers.

I could go on, but I’m sure you get the picture – my garden is alive with blooms and their lovely scent and I’m just loving it.

Still haven’t made plans for our summer vacation

June 26, 2008 by Tricia

Chris and I still need to plan some kind of vacation this summer. He hasn’t even booked any time off yet but at this point it looks like he’ll be off for either the first two weeks or August or the second and third week. He’s still waiting for a co-worker to decide on her vacation time … geesh!

I have a feeling that with the price of gas this year we won’t be taking a long driving trip, but you never know, maybe we’ll end up driving to Chicago again this summer. We did that two years ago when we went to visit Chris’ brother and we had a great time. I loved Chicago. Of course if we go out of the country I’ll get travel insurance at least for me since I have a chronic illness. I can’t take a risk that my Crohn’s won’t flare up while I’m away and I’d hate to end up paying huge hospital bills in the US.

Hmmm the other idea I had for a vacation was to perhaps rent a cabin somewhere near a lake. Yes I know all the good ones are probably booked by now, but I might be able to find something.

What are you doing for your summer vacation?
