I was watching one of those home shows on TV over the weekend, one of those ones where they totally renovate or redecorate one or two rooms of a house … Well, on the show I watched the renovated the living room so that it would be a home theater with theater seating, big screen TV, surround sound system and special lighting so that when you’re watching a film or something on the big screen the lighting is really low.
I’ve mentioned before that we hope to redo our basement. Well, no redo it, but finish the basement since it’s currently a raw unfinished space. We hope to make part of our basement a home theater room. Of course the rest of the plans include a really nice bathroom, perhaps hiding the laundry area and maybe a small spare bedroom.
I wonder if we can make a spare bedroom without closing off the space with walls? Perhaps just a half wall separating the bedroom area from the home theater room? Our basement is fairly small so I think the more open we keep the space the larger it will look. Yeah, I know, we can’t make it look bigger than it is, but if we start putting walls up all over the place it will look really small.
Any ideas for a basement renovation?

I used to have a friend back when I was living in the U.S. and her basement was awesome. It was very big and seemed to stretch across the entire underside of the house. They had a gym, TV, kitchen, and computer in there. Needless to say I came over as much as possible ๐

DTS our house is small so our basement is as well … but if we do ever get around to renovating it, it will give us some extra space (maybe 600 square feet of extra space or so?). I only wish our basement were large enough to fix up like your friends!

the theater idea is great but why not just put a couple futons in the space so they can act as seating and also be used as beds for company. just a thought.

I’ve always been paranoid about refinishing my basement. I’ve got this idea somewhere that it might flood or something and then I’d lose all that hard work. I suppose I’m being silly, but it stops me everytime.

Ah, the home theatre project!
It does require some forethought, especially if you’re considering the ambient lighting that will create the best viewing scenario. You’ll need to be comfortable with the wiring in your basement. Unless you’ve had experience with electrical work, be sure to enlist the help of a professional to help you get the results you want, safely and effectively!
