It’s funny how people change

August 17, 2007 by Tricia

This past weekend we had not only Chris’ brother and his kids from Chicago visiting, but Chris’ younger sister and her husband also came to visit and stayed over.

I find Chris’ sister and her husband a little funny these days. You see, back when Chris first moved to Toronto his brother in law (before he married Chris’ sister of course) was his college roommate. In fact, that’s how they first met and became close friends.

Chris’ sister used to come to Toronto regularly to have fun in the big city and we’d all get together and have a good time. Eventually Chris moved in with me and his sister got together with his roommate. Chris and I and his brother in law were all in the jewelry trade together, so even once we paired off into couples we still got together quite a bit since the jewelry industry is a close knit trade that’s very family like.

Now, Chris’ sister and her husband live in a small town southern Ontario. They’ve lived out that way for years. I think they’ve lived in a small town for too long though because they are now afraid of Toronto.

Chris sister told me no less than five times how many missing women there currently were in Toronto. She was wrong too, some of her tally were missing from other areas of the province. They were afraid of the crowds at the Taste of the Danforth, afraid of different cultures – we have a large Muslim population in our area, and just plain small minded.

I have no idea what happened to this pair to make them so afraid. They were true big city lovers no more than a decade ago. What changed in their lives to make them so closed off?

We all still have a good time when we get together, but my how they’ve changed!

Crohn’s isn’t just a terrible disease – it’s embarrassing!

August 17, 2007 by Tricia

My Crohn’s disease seems to be getting worse. I think I’ll have to go and see my gastrointernologist again soon. My medications just aren’t working.

We had guests over last weekend and we went out several times – we went to the very crowded and disappointing Taste of the Danforth, the beach, a private beach club, our for dinner and so on. All in all we had nine people staying in our home over three days.

It was too much for me. I already wasn’t feeling well before our guests arrived and now I’m spending the remainder of the week recovering from their visit. I think they made my crohn’s worse.

This is a terrible disease. I won’t get into all the symptoms, but when you have crohn’s your bowels – large or small intestines – are inflamed and can end up having scar tissue build up narrowing the intestines, abscesses can develop and you can’t digest foods very well. It causes a lot of pain and sometimes it can even cause a loss of control because, well there’s no other way to say this, but if you have crohn’s you probably have the runs a lot.

I’ve been lucky in that I haven’t actually had many accidents but I’d be lying if I said I’d never had one. Geez, even people with the flu have sometimes had an accident.

Anyway, when I go out I prefer to go to places I’ve been before. Places that I know exactly where each washroom is located in case I have to make a mad dash for the rest room. I sometimes even think that I should purchase some disposable underwear for those really bad days when I have to go out, but my system is acting up so much I can’t be sure that I won’t have one of those rare accidents.

What an awful disease eh? The pain, lack of digestion, fevers and abscesses are bad enough, but then you add the embarrassment of possibly having an accident and it makes it that much worse. I hate this disease.

There are nice people out there

August 17, 2007 by Tricia

My husband is a very happy man.

A wrote a post late last week about the Rick Wakeman concert that he wanted to get tickets for, but hadn’t yet, and a very nice man found my post and offered up his extra ticket.

Chris was out of town visiting his family when I received the kind mans message on Tuesday and I must admit that when Chris came home late Wednesday evening – much later than he was supposed to have come home, I forgot to tell him that he had a chance to go to the Rick Wakeman concert.

So yesterday as I was going through the email on my main computer I remembered that I’d saved the messages from the kind stranger and I asked Chris “Do you still want to go to that Rick Wakeman concert?” and he said “Hell Yes!” so I told him about that man that had offered the spare ticket – Free.

Chris was on the phone in minutes calling the mans number. They ended up talking on the phone for a while and it sounds like they’ll get along fine. That’s a good thing because I think the extra ticket was supposed to be for the mans wife but his wife didn’t want to see such an outdated musician (Rick Wakeman is the keyboardist from the band YES). It’s her loss. Chris is going.

I think they planned to meet up at a very cool Irish bar on the Danforth and then they’ll go to the Danforth Music Hall together.

I think they’ll have fun.

There’s always lots of things to complain about, but it’s really nice when someone randomly does something this nice.

The Magnetic Diet – how to lose weight and keep it off

August 16, 2007 by Tricia

I was just reading The magnetic diet weight loss program website, and while I’m not really a dieter, I believe that the magnetic diet might actually work.

Nick Smith, the creator of the Magnetic Diet, had tried a number of different diets over the years. He’d tried everything from low carb to low calorie diets, detox diets, diet supplements and fat burners and while he had some success with the various diets and supplements he tried he found that he’d lost weight but not body fat and didn’t feel all that healthy after losing weight.

He also found that he still craved the foods that made him gain weight in the first place and quickly fell back into old habits that would cause him to regain the weight he’d lost quickly.

So he set out to create a diet that would help him maintain his weight loss, keep his body fat low and keep the cravings for bad foods, foods that cause weight gain, at bay.

The Magnetic Diet contains well balanced food items that will help you lose weight and keep you healthy at the same time, as well as a combination of special breathing and energization exercises, meditation, and visualization techniques that work together to help the body burn fat, build muscle and help you regain or restore your health.

It sounds like Nick did a lot of research and came up with a diet that works. He’s published a book that’s called the Magnetic Diet weight loss system which can be purchased on his website. He states that if after trying the diet for 12 weeks you are not completely satisfied with your results he’ll refund your money. With a guarantee like that it’s worth trying isn’t it?

An ornamental seed head

Clematis seed head

I love growing clematis. I think I’ve got seven or eight different vines! Not only do most of them flower prolifically at least twice a year, but when the flowers die off they produce attractive seed heads too.

Obviously this photo above is of a clematis seed head. Isn’t it kind of cute? It’s a bit like a broom or a brush isn’t it?

Do you grow clematis in your garden or on your patio?
