Our free monitors

June 22, 2007 by Tricia

Years ago, before my husband and I moved to this neighborhood and both started working in the hospital my husband worked in the computer trade as a technician.

He worked for a fairly large company that sold computer related equiptment – huge orders of systems and associated peripherals, would go through their warehouse. Sometimes there was something wrong with the equipment and it either didn’t end up being shipped or it was returned by their clients.

The company often threw out the returned equipment. Not always, yes they’d return it to the manufacture most of the time but for some reason it was too much bother to send some of it back.

Well that’s how Chris and I ended up getting two viewsonic monitors. One is in use in our upstairs computer room. It’s a big 20 inch monitor. It had fallen and it’s got a crack across the top. It’s screen needs a lot of tinkering to get it to align properly but once you’ve put the time into it the monitor works great.

The second monitor is one of the first Viewsonic LCD monitors. As far as we know it’s in perfect working condition. Unfortunately it’s always been missing it’s cord so we’ve never been able to plug it in and use it.

I’d love to find a place that sold possibly obscure computer and monitor accessories as I might be able to find the right cord at one of these places.

Interesting how we got some nice freebies though isn’t it?

Keeping track of my finances

June 22, 2007 by Tricia

As many of you know I earn my income through my websites. Whether it’s posts on my blogs, selling text links in my sidebars, affiliates, Google adsense or whatever else of the many things I do to earn an income.

Do you know how hard it is the keep track of everything? It’s not like I’m getting paid once a month by most of these companies. No .. I’ve actually got money coming in daily.

So I think I need to get some kind of financial reporting software. It would help me keep track of my income daily, weekly and monthly and if I found the right software it might even help when it comes times to create statements for tax purposes.

I’ve got to look into this further.

Still figuring out redirects for some sites

June 21, 2007 by Tricia

I’ve been trying to work on my websites so that they will either redirect to an url with www in it, or without www. I’ve managed to do this for all of my sites but one. It’s a CMS site that runs on Joomla. A very old version of Joomla.

Looks like I’ll have to start brushing up on Joomla info as well as upgrade the site in order to find out how I can maintain the url with a www in it. Htaccess 301 redirects don’t seem to work.

Anyone else do an Htaccess 301 redirect on a Joomla run site? if so, how did you do it?

Backup your data online with IDrive-E

June 21, 2007 by Tricia

I know so many people who love using their computers, but they don’t do much to protect the data that they store on their computers. I’ve always been an advocate of keeping a backup of computer data. Whether it be all the important files on the computer or just the files and folders that contain information that it would be a shame to lose.

Now there’s an easy way to back up your data. IDrive-E provides an online backup service that is free for those storing 2 GB of data or less. You can use this backup service to protect anything from your financial documents, MP3s, videos, emails, and photos.

This is a secure online backup service as it’s encrypted with 256 bit AES.

Once an IDrive-E member stores backup data on IDrive-E their backup will appear as a mapped drive on their PC. This makes it easy to restore data when necessary.

IDrive-E also offers a pro package for as little as $49.50 per year. Those who take this package will be able to store and unlimited amount of data. This would be a great subscription package for small businesses. Plus, IDrive-E has recently enhanced their service giving small businesses the ability to create and manage multiple accounts.

Visit the IDrive-E website today to learn more about their online backup service.

Luckily it’s not really like that

surgery

Would it be scary if I told you that sometimes, with some doctors, working in a hospital seems just like this cartoon?

Actually most of the doctors I’ve worked with the in the ER and the doctors from special services like surgery, cardiology, orthopedics and so on are all excellent doctors .. but one or two come to mind when I think of docs I wouldn’t want to have care for me!

I guess every workplace is like this … there’s always one or two employees who manage to keep their jobs despite their lack of skill. It’s just really bad when it’s a doctor or nurse!
