I’ve been noticing a trend that disturbs me lately. I run the do follow blogroll and of course my sites are listed on it. In the past week there have been a number of people going around and leaving comments on all of my blogs and using website addresses rather than blog addresses in their signature.
Now, yes, I realize that no everyone has a blog, and some website owners do like to read blogs and leave comments. That’s not my beef. It’s people going around listing various different pages of their website in their signature and leaving comments that either don’t really go well with the post, or comments such “oh with the title of that post and your blog description I thought I’d find something like that here”. Maybe innocent enough, but when you see practically the same comment on a few posts on the same blog or on a few different blogs that you own you start to believe that people are just coming by to leave a link since your blog follows.
I love getting comments on my posts. However I’m starting to feel a bit used.
The do follow blogroll has been copied on to several sites and the people that are abusing the gift of links that follow are not members of the blogroll.
I set my blogs to follow because I want to reward my commenter’s for participating in the discussion and for hopefully being regular visitors. Those of us who have chosen to remove the nofollow tags from our blogs lose a tiny bit of our sites PR every time someone leaves a comment.
I would hope that those that leave comments can see why we want valid comments and not just spam to promote another persons site or to get a free link.
If you are following the blogs on the Do Follow Blogroll and leaving comments please only leave valid comments that add to the conversation of the post and don’t abuse our kindness.

I turn on comment moderation and manually filter the spam.
Just a thought.
