Making a tiny bathroom seem larger

Since Chris has been home for the last few days with the flu we’ve had some time to talk about our renovation plans. I think we’ve pretty much decided that our upstairs bathroom will be the next room that we tackle.

I hate our bathroom. It’s so tiny! I mean, I have to turn sideways to get to the toilet as I pass the sink and bathtub. There’s only a foot or less worth of space between the two!

We can’t afford to tear out the whole bathroom and make it larger at this time. However, we can paint it a lighter color to make it seem larger, replace the dingy bathroom lighting and possibly get a smaller bathroom vanity.

We already have a very small vanity. It’s only 21 inches deep I believe, but we obviously need something even smaller. I’m thinking of getting a narrow pedestal and a basin sink that sits on top of the stand. Depending upon what we find that might give us 6 to 12 inches more space between the sink and bathtub.

I think I’ll spend sometime brainstorming later today on how I can make our tiny bathroom feel larger. Any ideas?

This can be a definate challenge. Bright colours are very helpful as it helps creat the illusion of bigger rather than a dark color. My wife and I redid a main floor powder room and put in a glass vanity and raised sink. This helped quite a bit as it looks very open. I hope these couple suggestions help as they did for me. I may put up a write up on the glass vanity on my site at http://www.backyardman.com to show you the glass vanity and the illusion of making things larger. Keep us informed as I will be curious of great ideas coming from another home decorator.

If the room is that tight, you might want to look into a wall-mounted toilet. They’re about $1,000 installed, but they can save you 9 inches or so of room and can make things a lot more comfortable.

I have a tiny bathroom remodel and I’m planning on putting in a corner toilet and sink to make things easier, but my remodeling is complicated by a person in the house who needs things to be wheelchair accessible AND a tiny bathroom. :)
